The best American food in Washington, according to the experts: James Beard Awards, Michelin Guide, and Food & Wine have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Oyster Oyster comes out on top.

More Less

The Dabney and Harrimans Grill hold the next two places. AAA shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Washingtonian close behind.

  1. Rank 1. Oyster Oyster

    Vegetarian American

A nine-course vegetable tasting menu in Shaw where the chef holds a James Beard Award and a Michelin star, and still manages to make a beet taste like pastrami. Rob Rubba's kitchen treats local farms as the whole point, not a selling line, and the results are the kind of thing that makes omnivores quietly reconsider their priorities. The bread alone, enriched with "garleeks" and served with sunflower-marigold butter, gets talked about for days afterward.

  2. The wood-fired hearth in the open kitchen sets the mood before anything arrives at the table. This fine dining room in a Shaw alley does Mid-Atlantic cooking with a Southern undertow, and the chef's commitment to the region shows in everything from rooftop herbs to the catfish slider that's been on the menu since forever. A Michelin star keeps company with crowds who dress up but aren't stiff about it.

  3. Rank 4. 2Fifty

    Texas Barbecue

A counter-service BBQ spot in suburban Maryland where the American Wagyu brisket is buttery enough to stop conversation mid-sentence. The smoked turkey and peppery pork ribs fill out a tray you'll keep adding to despite your better judgment, and the sides, brisket-studded beans included, pull their weight. Lines form fast, so regulars often grab their bags and go. A James Beard semifinalist, and ranked tenth on Washingtonian's top 100.

  4. Rank 5. 2Fifty

    Barbecue

The American Wagyu brisket is the kind of thing that makes you briefly reconsider your whole life. This counter-service BBQ spot smokes everything over wood, and the lineup, brisket, pork ribs, and smoked turkey, has the room packed early and the bags out the door fast. The sides pull their weight too, particularly the brisket-studded beans. A James Beard semifinalist in 2026, it ranked tenth on Washingtonian's list that same year.

  5. A large spinning rotisserie dominates the open kitchen at this Capitol Hill New American restaurant, and the menu more or less organizes itself around it. The duck is the obvious move, but seasonal Mid-Atlantic produce does serious supporting work throughout. The room is spare, which keeps the focus where the kitchen wants it. The New York Times put it on their D.C. shortlist, and a 2024 James Beard nomination for Outstanding Restaurateur followed.

  6. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out over a pond, which sets the mood before the tasting menu even begins. This is polished fine dining in Falls Church, the kind where the monthly French-inflected menu chases both the season and chef Bertrand Chemel's restless imagination. Five courses, and you choose at each one, with vegetarian and meat paths running in parallel. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist in 2024.

  7. Rank 7. Chloe

    New American

Shareable plates at this Navy Yard restaurant pull from enough corners of the world that the menu reads like a well-stamped passport. The chef behind it has a diverse résumé, and that shows in combinations that feel considered rather than random. The room draws a neighborhood crowd that actually seems happy to be there, which in a trendy district is its own quiet achievement.

  8. Rank 9. 1789

    American-French

A Federal-period Georgetown townhouse carved into six dining rooms across three floors, each one feeling like it belongs to a different century of the same family. This is the fine dining room where Georgetown parents take their kids to celebrate things, and the veteran servers have clearly done this long enough to find the whole ritual quietly amusing. The French-influenced New American kitchen runs on classic instincts, and holds a AAA Four Diamond rating.

  9. Rank 9. Rye Bunny

    New American

Drinks come to you while you're still in line, which tells you something about the priorities here. Rye Bunny is a counter-order, full-service-at-the-table comfort food spot in Adams Morgan, the kind of place where fried chicken arrives with chili jam and the pasta changes with whatever's good right now. The menu roams freely, seasonal and a little playful, without ever feeling like it's trying to impress you about it.

  10. A sandwich bar that also takes cocktails seriously, Your Only Friend sits in Shaw with a menu full of pun names and a genuinely considered drinks list. The sandwiches lean into comfort food done with some wit, and the sides and bar snacks fill out a meal without much effort. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, which means the kitchen is doing something right at a price that won't sting.

  11. Rank 12. Marcus

    American

The rum cake arrives tableside, which is either theater or efficiency depending on your mood. Marcus Samuelsson's hotel restaurant in NoMa runs New American with a wide lens, pulling in tamarind, obe, and uni-béarnaise alongside the kind of blue cornbread that people talk about unprompted. The room dazzles and the menu follows. A James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist runs the kitchen.

  12. Rank 13. Shilling Canning Company

    Mid-Atlantic American

  13. Olive-green velvet booths, a room that hums with the particular energy of people who might be somebody, and martinis that make a two-hour lunch feel like a reasonable life choice. Stephen Starr revived this old Washington institution near the White House into a full-service American restaurant with a menu that leans classic without apology: French dip, lobster bisque, oysters in beurre blanc. The champagne layer cake arrives frosted in pink, which somehow feels correct.

  14. Rank 15. Annabelle

    Modern American

A cool marble bar greets you before you've even found your table, and the room behind it, skylighted and hung with art, reads as elegant without being airless. This is a polished American dining room in Kalorama where the menu follows the seasons and the service stays warm instead of formal. The martinis are serious, and the pastry program gives you an actual reason to stay for dessert.

  15. The wood-burning oven at the center of the open kitchen is roughly the size of a studio apartment, and it sets the agenda here. Blue Duck Tavern is an upscale American restaurant inside the Park Hyatt, with soaring windows, walnut seating, and glass-enclosed booths that regulars treat as personal property. The menu leans into farms and purveyors, and the dessert station and near-30-tea list reward anyone who lingers.

  16. The pleather booths and wood paneling in this Petworth neighborhood spot haven't moved in decades, which is fine because neither has the fried chicken. It's a Southern comfort restaurant where the menu reads short and the kitchen makes everything to order, including that chicken, which arrives crisp, juicy, and worth whatever wait the buzzy bar requires. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the homemade fries have something to do with that.

  17. An Art Deco chophouse and raw bar in downtown Silver Spring, J. Hollinger's splits its loyalties between land and sea: prime steaks anchor the menu, but the kitchen lets you pile on butter-poached crab or fried oysters if you're feeling ambitious. The duck confit and homemade ricotta ravioli give non-carnivores a reason to show up too. Happy hour runs most of the week, and the dollar oysters keep things from getting too serious.

  19. The buffalo wings here have a two-day head start on you: brined overnight, chilled, then fried and sauced to order with Frank's and butter. This is the food operation inside the U Street bar Sport & Social, run by Scott Drewno, the chef behind Anju. The wings earned a spot on the Washingtonian's favorite dishes of the year, and after one order you'll understand the fuss, even if ordering anything else feels beside the point.

  20. Rank 21. Dauphine's

    Cajun & Creole

A sprawling Cajun and Creole restaurant spread across three levels, Dauphine's brings New Orleans cooking to downtown DC without any of the usual kitsch. The menu runs from oysters to blackened soft-shell crab to dark chocolate crémeux, and the cocktails are the kind that make you order a second before finishing the first. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks: big flavors, no ceremony.

  21. Rank 21. TRIO GRILL

    American

Live piano music sets the pace at this American dinner spot in Falls Church, where the room runs toward white tablecloths and a slower, unhurried evening. The menu leans into steakhouse-adjacent comfort, think filet with Chianti jus and dayboat scallops on sweet corn, with a bourbon peach cobbler to close. Service is the kind that notices when your glass is low, which in Northern Virginia counts as a personality trait.

  22. Rank 21. Vermilion

    Modern American

Candlelit brick rooms inside a historic King Street townhouse set the tone: this is a modern American dinner spot that takes farm-to-table seriously without dressing it up in ceremony. The kitchen leans into simplicity, letting a slow-cooked beef rib in blackberry glaze or Amish chicken with saffron aioli carry the room without architectural plating or a lengthy tasting menu to justify the tab.

  27. Rank 24. Zinnia

    Seasonal American

Garden vegetables grown on the property turn up in dishes that change with the seasons at this full-service American restaurant in Silver Spring. The building has been around forever, and the vaulted ceilings and outdoor garden, complete with private nooks, give the space a slightly romantic, old-estate feel that the cocktail list works hard to keep casual. House-made desserts close things out.

  28. Rank 29. Michele’s

    American Brasserie

Named after chef Matt Baker's late mother, this French-inflected American brasserie inside the Eaton Hotel leans hard into Baker's Houston and New Orleans roots. NOLA-style roasted oysters and crawfish linguine share the menu with smashburgers and Nashville hot chicken, which is either an identity crisis or a very good night out, depending on your mood. The room wears its hotel address lightly.

  37. Rank 38. The Grill

    American

The Grill is a sit-down American restaurant at the Wharf, the sort of place you pick when the show at the Anthem starts soon and nobody can agree on dinner. The menu is steaks, salads, mac and cheese, and lobster rolls, a dressed-up cousin of the roadside chain. There's a wine wall with faux wood pillars, and the servers wear formal attire, which feels generous for a burger.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
