The best American food in Chicago, according to the experts: James Beard Awards, AAA, and Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Virtue comes out on top.

More Less

Lula Cafe and North Pond hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA next.

  1. Rank 1. Virtue

    Southern

Skillet cornbread arrives with a steak knife and honey butter, which tells you most of what you need to know about Erick Williams's Southern restaurant in Hyde Park. The dining room is warm and unhurried, the kind of place the university crowd treats as a standing Thursday plan. Williams holds two James Beard Awards, and the Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand. The cooking is rooted and serious without ever feeling like a lecture.

  2. A neighborhood restaurant in Logan Square that won a James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality, which tells you something before you've even sat down. The menu rotates with the seasons, so regulars show up trusting the kitchen rather than ordering from memory. The room fills fast from morning through dinner, and the bar in the adjacent space is a solid solo option. The Michelin Guide lists it as a Bib Gourmand.

  3. Rank 3. North Pond

    Seasonal American

A converted ice skaters' warming hut on the edge of a Lincoln Park pond, with the Chicago skyline framing the water outside the windows. North Pond runs a tasting menu that moves with the seasons, the chef pulling in Latin and Asian influences alongside herbs from a rooftop garden overhead. The room is warm brick and candlelight, the kind of place that earns its romantic reputation without visibly trying.

  4. The order at this old-school Italian beef counter is "beef, hot, dipped," and you say it fast because there's a line and nobody here has time for your uncertainty. Johnnie's has been slinging thin-shaved, garlicked beef soaked in its own jus, piled into a roll with spicy giardiniera, since before most of its regulars were born. You eat over the hood of your car in the parking lot, which is not a quirk but the entire point.

  5. Rank 4. Sanders BBQ Supply Co.

    Southern Barbecue

The oxtail gumbo here carries a whiff of hardwood smoke, which tells you everything about how this Beverly smokehouse operates. Sanders BBQ Supply Co. sits about twelve miles south of the Loop, deep in a neighborhood few tourists reach, doing the kind of slow, wood-fired barbecue that connects to Chicago's Great Migration roots. The New York Times put it on their 2025 restaurant list, and the pitmaster earned a James Beard semifinalist nod.

  6. Rank 6. Ina Mae

    Cajun & Creole Tavern

A New Orleans-style tavern in Wicker Park named for the chef's great-grandmother, which tells you the food comes with some actual stakes. The bar up front runs three-deep, the dining room behind it hums with the kind of staff that keeps things loose without losing the thread. Gumbo, po'boys, and beignets anchor the menu, and the Nashville fried chicken has quietly become the thing regulars steer everyone toward.

  7. Servers roam the floor with hot coffee and donut holes before you've even ordered, which tells you everything about what kind of diner Lou Mitchell's is. Booths, counter stools, eggs cooked every way imaginable, and an open-faced Reuben on homemade rye that has anchored many a morning near Union Station. An old-school Chicago institution that has never once tried to be anything else.

  8. The mochiko fried chicken, made exclusively from dark meat, is a reasonable place to start understanding what this Hawaiian plate lunch spot in Highwood is about. The chef went from feeding co-workers at a carwash to a brick-and-mortar in what feels like about fifteen minutes. Loco moco, huli huli chicken, and grilled pork belly land on your tray with the kind of confidence that got the place onto the New York Times list of top Chicago restaurants.

  9. The mochiko fried chicken, made with dark meat only, has apparently non-negotiable opinions about itself. This Hawaiian plate lunch spot grew from pandemic-era pop-up dinners to a downtown Chicago address, serving huli huli chicken, loco moco, and grilled pork belly to a city where 60 degrees is not, in fact, considered freezing. The New York Times named it one of Chicago's 25 best restaurants right now.

  10. Rank 9. etc.

    Southern

Etc. is a stylish Southern restaurant in the Loop, a neighborhood not known for fluorescent pillars or an R&B soundtrack that makes you forget you're a few blocks from a Willis Tower gift shop. Couples split smoked turkey rice and fried okra, friends pass lamb chops, and the oxtail comes under gravy, next to purple grits. The chef is a James Beard Best Chef: Great Lakes semifinalist, if you like your comfort food credentialed.

  11. Rank 12. Big Jones

    Creative Southern

  12. Rank 14. Gilt Bar

    American

Studded leather banquettes and low, nostalgic lighting set the tone at this moody River North gastrobar, where the front bar runs cocktails at a steady clip and the kitchen leans into big plates and bolder flavors. Fried chicken with a proper crust, beef cheek pot pie with bone marrow gravy, a carrot cake you'll talk yourself into ordering despite having no room: the Michelin Bib Gourmand crowd knows what it's doing here.

  13. Rank 14. Longman & Eagle

    Contemporary American

The whiskey list at this Logan Square gastropub runs long enough to suggest the bar is the main event, and the dim wood-paneled room backs that theory up. Then the kitchen, tucked into a corner, starts sending out terrines and sweetbreads and omelets folded with brie that quietly reframe the whole situation. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of neighborhood place where people wander in at breakfast and somehow stay for dinner.

  14. Rank 14. Union

    American

Edison bulbs, dark wood, and long high tops set the tone at this gastropub in Logan Square, where the same team behind next-door Lardon turned their attention to dinner. The menu leans comfort without losing its nerve, running from fried cheese curds to shawarma-spiced chicken with flatbread. Craft beer gets serious treatment, with a locally sourced lineup. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and every table seems to have at least one cheeseburger on it.

  15. Rank 17. Soul & Smoke

    Chicago-Style Barbecue

  16. Barrels and wine bottles line the walls here, and the shop and tasting bar out front make clear that wine is the whole point. Cooper's Hawk is a full-service American restaurant with a globally roaming menu, the kind of place suburban date-nighters discover and then return to every few weeks. The food swings from Asian-inflected starters to churrasco and braised short ribs, with pasta filling the middle ground for anyone who can't decide.

  18. The glass-enclosed rooftop dining room sits on top of a furniture showroom, which says a lot about Oak Brook and even more about RH's ambitions. Olive trees and a fountain give the room a garden-house feel, and the American menu runs from a burger to whole branzino, with shareable plates and composed salads filling the middle ground. It draws a dressed-up suburban crowd happy to linger over a long lunch with a view.

  21. A rotisserie chicken counter named for the chef's mom, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. Order at the counter, pick your portion size, add the smashed potatoes cooked in chicken drippings, and try not to feel smug about your choices. The dirt cup with gummy worms is there for adults who prefer their nostalgia unironic. The staff are warmer and more composed than the format requires.

  22. Rank 23. The Perch

    American

Large steel fermentation vats line the back wall of this cozy Wicker Park brewpub, making the beer program hard to ignore. The kitchen holds its own with filet sliders layered with blue cheese and caramelized onions, a grilled fish sandwich with house-made remoulade, and a warm carrot cake with candied pecans that earns its spot on the menu. Tastings help you navigate the draft list before committing, which is a small mercy.

  23. Rank 23. Warlord

    Live-Fire American

Diners queue on the sidewalk before the doors open, which tells you something about how this no-reservations live-fire restaurant on Milwaukee Ave operates. Everything passes over, under, or through the flames, from the foie gras ganache on grilled hearth bread to the butter cake that comes out of the fire with a crackling crust. The chefs' counter, where you can watch the whole production up close, is the seat everyone actually wants.

  24. This is a cafeteria-line Jewish deli where you grab a tray, slide it past the steam tables, and let a man pile corned beef onto rye until it stops resembling lunch and starts resembling a load-bearing wall. The walls are papered in old newspaper clippings and notes from Chicago big shots, a nod to when deals got brokered between bites. Prices are easy, the dress code is whatever you wore to work.

  29. Rank 29. Redhot Ranch

    Chicago-Style American

The Depression dog, a Chicago hot dog variant that arrives with fries piled right on top of the bun, is a good reason to find this counter-service hot dog stand on Armitage. Redhot Ranch uses natural-casing sausages, which means an actual snap when you bite in. The smash burgers are a serious value. The same owners run 35th Street Red Hots near Sox Park, same menu, if that's closer.

  32. Rank 35. Black Briar

    Global American Gastropub

Black Briar is a gastropub in the old Bar Takito space on North Morgan, which means it has 110 seats and a menu that wanders from raw oysters to venison tartare without apologizing. Snail toast shares the page with handmade cavatelli, so nobody has to commit to a single personality. There's a U-shaped bar for the solo diners and an open kitchen for anyone who likes to watch dinner get argued over.

  33. Rank 35. Carlyle Club

    American Steakhouse

Carlyle Club sits on the Chicago River and runs a menu that can't decide between a steakhouse and a sushi bar, then declines to choose. Dry-aged steaks share the table with raw bar towers, handmade pasta, and a wagyu cooked over binchotan. There's a small sushi counter for the committed, plus hand rolls at the bar for everyone else. Expect an all-day, expense-account kind of room where a burger and a lobster pie coexist peacefully.

  37. The aquarium smoker in the window tells you what kind of place this is before you get through the door. Uncle John's is a South Side Chicago BBQ shop running one of the city's rarest traditions: pork hot links and rib tips cooked in a plexiglass box, fire controlled by hose, a technique tracing back to Delta pitmasters who came north during the Great Migration. The New York Times named it among Chicago's 25 best restaurants.

  43. Rank 46. Brulee

    Southern

  44. Southern Chicago is a steakhouse-ish dinner spot in the South Loop where the crystal chandeliers and plush velvet seating suggest the Las Vegas Strip got lost on the way to Soldier Field. The kitchen cooks steaks over open flame and stacks seafood towers, and the sides lean decadent, like deviled eggs topped with shrimp and caviar. Plan on dressing a notch up, and on a lot of conventioneers.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
