The best Korean food in Chicago, according to the experts: The Banchets, Bon Appétit, and Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Jeong comes out on top.

More Less

PERILLA Fare and Parachute HiFi hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  1. Rank 1. Jeong

    Korean

A sleek, intimate tasting room on West Chicago Ave where two chefs turn Korean pantry staples into something considerably more architectural. The room is small and modern, the cooking precise, and the mood falls somewhere between a serious dinner and a genuinely good time. A Michelin Selected restaurant, and a Bon Appétit best new restaurant pick a few years back. Wear something nice and leave the night open.

  2. A mural of Michelle Obama in a hanbok greets you at the door, which sets the tone for a Korean steakhouse that doesn't take the expected route. The room is sleek but warm, with large windows onto Milwaukee Ave. and a semi-open kitchen. The menu reads like familiar Korean comfort food seen sideways, banchan on every table, kimchi stew, fire chicken, and Wagyu tartare brightened with Asian pear. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  3. Rank 3. Parachute HiFi

    Korean Cocktail Bar

Parachute HiFi is a Korean listening bar from the Parachute team, built for people who'd rather hear a record than their own thoughts. Vinyl spins while the menu runs street-food mashups, like a burger drowned in Comté fondue and tteokbokki in a pad Thai situation, alongside cocktails. It's casual and dressy-ish in the way a good record collection is, and it takes reservations but still keeps room for walk-ins.

  4. This Korean pub on Northbrook's Milwaukee Avenue strip treats baseball, karaoke, and a very large amount of fried chicken as one coherent plan. Beer arrives in a tableside tower, which turns a seafood pancake into a group project. It's casual and loud in the way a place with a karaoke setup has to be, and it works best with a crowd that doesn't mind sharing a tteokbokki skillet and an opinion on the pitching.

  11. Rank 7. Han Bat

    Korean

  12. Joong Boo is a Korean grocery, and the cooking happens at Snack Corner, a few tables tucked in the back of the Kimball Avenue store. You can get bibimbap, soondubu-jjigae, or a bowl of rice cake soup, then do your shopping with a full stomach, which every grocery trip should begin with. A dumpling shop up front is there if lunch doesn't feel complete yet. Cheap, casual, and nobody minds the cart.

  13. Rank 7. Kfire

    Korean

Kfire is a fast-casual Korean American spot on Milwaukee Ave where you build your own bowl, and nearly everything on the menu bends to your will, including swapping the rice for salad. The galbi gets compared favorably to sit-down barbecue places, and the Impossible crumbles come marinated like galbi and pressed into patties, which is a sentence nobody expected to write. Eater lists it among Chicago's best Korean restaurants.

  14. Rank 7. Kimski

    Korean

  15. Mister Tiger is a family-run Korean restaurant on West Grand, the sort of place where the free banchan arrives before you've decided anything, including whether you like fermented fish cakes. Eater has listed it among Chicago's Korean restaurants. The galbi jjim, braised short rib with carefully carved vegetables in a broth that's sweet with a bitter edge, is the dish to order. The fried chicken and bulgogi hold their own around it.

  17. Rank 7. Woo Chon Korean BBQ Restaurant

    Charcoal Korean Barbecue

  18. 82 Kimbap is a weekday-only stall in Sterling Food Hall, and it exists so the Loop's office workers have something to eat at noon that isn't a sandwich. The rice rolls come stuffed with spicy pork, bulgogi, or braised tofu, wrapped around egg, vegetables, and purple rice. Add-ons include instant ramyun and giant fishcake skewers, though the line is there for the rolls. Expect to eat at a food-hall table under fluorescent lanyard energy.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
