The best bistros in Washington, according to the experts: AAA, Michelin Guide, and The Infatuation have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Bresca comes out on top.

More Less

La' Shukran and Lapis hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA next.

  1. Rank 1. Bresca

    Contemporary Bistro

A moss wall and a foie gras "negroni" topped with Campari gelée tell you pretty quickly that this is not a low-key bistro. Ryan Ratino's contemporary New American spot on 14th Street holds a Michelin star and earns it with cooking that is quietly surreal without being smug about it. The room is warm enough that you forget you're at a special-occasion restaurant until the check arrives.

  2. Up a set of funkily painted stairs off a Union Market alley, this French-Levantine bistro from the chef behind Albi earns its own conversation. The hummus topped with smoky escargots and arak butter landed on the New York Times list of best dishes across the country, and the falafel with dill yogurt and trout roe is close behind. Za'atar cocktails, jewel-toned walls, and habibi funk on vinyl fill out the rest.

  3. Rank 2. Lapis

    Modern Afghan Bistro

Afghan rugs on whitewashed walls and hurricane lamps set a date-night mood that doesn't feel like it's trying too hard. This Afghan restaurant in Columbia Heights earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand with food that's fragrant and light, nothing buried under heavy spice. The flatbreads and dumplings are reliable starting points, and the qabili palow, lamb over basmati with carrots and raisins, is the dish regulars plan their evening around.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
