The Top 25 Coffee Shops in Manhattan

The best coffee shops in Manhattan, by the professional record: Sprudgie Awards, US Coffee Championships, and Time Out have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Arcane Estate Coffee comes out on top.

Coffee Project New York and Abraço hold the next two places. Time Out shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  1. Rank 1. Arcane Estate Coffee

    Panamanian Coffee

  2. Rank 3. Abraço

    Coffee

The cured olive cookie has been living rent-free in regulars' heads for years, which tells you something about this East Village espresso bar. Abraço roasts its own, keeps laptops out, and occasionally pivots to cocktails for evening music events, which is either a flex or just very New York. The room fills fast on weekends, the bites are small and creative, and the whole operation runs with a neighborhood-institution energy that's genuinely hard to fake.

  3. Rank 3. La Cabra

    Danish Coffee

A U-shaped bar anchors this Danish coffee shop, where streamlined taps for cold drinks share space with a proper V60 setup and a counter lined with pastries worth stopping for. La Cabra built a following in Copenhagen before planting roots on the Lower East Side, and the East Village original still draws a crowd that treats croissants and a carefully pulled espresso as a reasonable reason to leave the house.

  4. Rank 6. Grace Street

    Korean Coffee Shop

  5. The picture window looks out on a community garden at 9th and Avenue C, and that's about as decorative as this coffee shop gets. Ninth Street Espresso has been a purist espresso spot in Alphabet City since what feels like the dawn of specialty coffee, roasting its own beans out in Long Island City and keeping the menu ruthlessly short. A cookie, a vegan mini-loaf, a bench out front if the weather allows.

  6. Concrete floors, black accent walls, and two arc-shaped bars make this FiDi coffee shop feel like it wandered in from Brooklyn and decided to stay. A multi-roaster menu pulls from a rotating cast of serious names, and the espresso machine moonlights for by-the-cup drip. There's a small food menu, housemade pastries, and, naturally, wine. Laptop seating is deliberately scarce, which says everything about what the room is for.

  7. Rank 12. Bluestone Lane

    Australian Coffee

  8. Rank 12. Lê Phin

    Vietnamese Coffee

  9. Rank 12. maman

    French

  10. Rank 21. Buunni Coffee

    Ethiopian Coffee

  11. Two benches out front are famous enough to appear in the logo, which tells you something about how long this West Village coffee shop has been part of the neighborhood. Joe Coffee Company roasts its own beans in Long Island City and piles the pastry case high with muffins and quickbreads. It has the warm, unhurried feel of a place where regulars know the staff by name, which in New York passes for a small miracle.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. It runs on the scored places nearby: more good stuff within reach, higher score. If it looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
