The white Victorian pile in the Berkeley Hills has been visible from across the bay for as long as anyone can remember, a Fairmont resort that manages to feel more country estate than corporate flag. Rooms are handsome across the board, and the grounds run to multiple outdoor pools, a full tennis club, and a spa. On a clear day San Francisco is right there on the horizon, close enough to admire and far enough to ignore.
