Daikanyama Issai Kassai
Japanese
A warmly lit counter visible through glass walls sets the tone at this basement izakaya in Daikanyama, where the vibe is Japanese in bones and somehow easy and Western in feel. The chef trained in New York before bringing that sensibility home, and the proprietress greets guests in kimono. Sashimi comes as a shared platter, potato salad and steamed siu mai are fixtures, and a bowl of takikomi-gohan closes things out.
