Concrete walls pressed with cedar-wood grain sit alongside a living machiya townhouse on the banks of the Kamo River, which tells you a lot about what this small hotel is doing. Rooms lean minimalist, but the joinery is Kyoto-craftsman level, the floors are radiant-heated, and river-facing rooms have balconies. Verner Panton chairs in tatami rooms shouldn't work and somehow do. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.
