Les Philosophes is a corner café on the busy Rue Vieille du Temple that serves homemade bistro food all day, at prices that stay out of eye-watering territory. The onion soup is made with chicken stock, which makes it lighter than the usual brooding bowl, and the quiches come in bacon or vegetable. The croissants arrive from a good bakery up the road, with no surcharge for dunking one in your coffee. The terrace is where people linger and watch the street.

    How we score

    The dishes from the writeups

    • French onion soup

“The French onion soup is lighter than most, with a richly flavored chicken stock standing in for more typical beef or veal, and the salads are dotted with premium charcuterie and raw milk cheeses paired with seasonal fruits and vegetables.”

      The Infatuation
    • Quiche

“The quiches are always excellent, with a buttery base filled either with classic bacon or vegetables.”

      The Infatuation
    • Croissant

“And it’s the only café where we’ll actually eat a croissant, seeing as they source them from one of the city’s best bakeries just up the road (and don't charge a crazy supplement for the privilege of dunking it in their organic café crème).”

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
