A Beaux-Arts corner building in the heart of Beaune's medieval wine country, Maison 1896 is a boutique hotel that somehow makes a California-designed interior and a blue-tiled cocktail bar feel right at home next to gilded mirrors and original oak beams. The heated limestone floors and handmade custom beds lean modern, the dormer windows and writing desks lean decidedly French, and the whole thing manages to thread the needle without trying too hard.
