The chef mills buckwheat in-house, mixes the dough by hand, and cuts every noodle, which is the kind of dedication that explains a 45-minute wait at a noodle shop in deep industrial West Oakland. The good news is you wait in a gorgeous bamboo-fountain courtyard designed by a Zen Buddhist craftsman, which softens the blow considerably. Soba earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and they cap orders at 100 a night, so arriving early is its own reward.

    The dishes from the writeups

    • Tenseiro

“Handmade Japanese noodles come in two varieties: 100% or 90% buckwheat, served hot or cold in dishes like tenseiro, chewy cold soba with feather-light tempura shrimp and vegetables alongside a flavorful dipping sauce.”

      Michelin Guide
    • Kamo nanban

“For something warmer, kamo nanban, a rich broth with tender slices of duck breast, hits the spot.”

      Michelin Guide
    • Tofu

“chef Koichi Ishii is now offering an extremely pared-down menu for walk-ups: fresh soba noodles with a soy sauce-based dipping sauce ($16), delicate homemade tofu ($7) and cured mackerel sushi ($12).”

      San Francisco Chronicle
    • Tamagoyaki

      “sweet tamagoyaki, grilled omelet.”

      San Francisco Chronicle

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
