A glowing alabaster column pours down through the atrium like frozen lava, and the reception desk is carved from the same luminescent stone. This design hotel in the heart of Habsburg Madrid was built around its owner's archaeological obsessions: ancient Egyptian works fill a basement gallery, and antique Hindu and Chinese pieces furnish the rooms, each with museum-style notes. Dark mahogany floors, black leather, and a rooftop pool six stories above the street round things out.
