The 65 Best Places to Drink and Do in Germany

The best places to drink and do in Germany, according to the experts: The 50, Difford's Guide, and Vogue have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Schloss Johannisberg comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Berlin and Munich.

More Less

Weingut Dr. Loosen and Wax On hold the next two places. Difford's Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

Drink + Do, change section

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. A Neoclassical palace on a Rheingau hillside that has been growing Riesling longer than most countries have existed, Schloss Johannisberg is a winery visit where the cellar tour goes genuinely deep: barrels made from the estate's own forest, abbey vaults holding around 25,000 bottles, and vintages stretching back to the mid-1700s. It ranks second on the World's 50 Best Vineyards list, which gives you a sense of the company it keeps.

  2. Rank 3. Wax On

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar on a Neukölln street lined with them, Wax On separates itself by running a rotary evaporator and centrifuge behind the bar, which is either deeply nerdy or deeply appealing depending on your crowd. The drinks stay close to the classics but veer off in odd, satisfying directions. It holds a spot on both Europe's 50 Best Bars and the World's 50 Best Bars lists, and the prices somehow don't reflect any of that.

  3. Baden-Baden has been luring people to its thermal waters since Roman times, which gives Brenners Park Spa a very long tradition to live up to. The five-story spa complex sits inside a grand hotel that just finished a full renovation, with serious attention paid to the waters themselves. Vogue named it among the 100 best spas in the world. The surrounding Black Forest keeps the whole thing feeling less like a hotel amenity and more like the actual point of the trip.

  4. The curved thatched roofs of traditional Frisian cottages make this look like a very beautiful village, which is one way to distract you from the fact that you're here to fast and have your gut interrogated. Lanserhof Sylt is a medical wellness retreat built around the Mayr Method, meaning diagnostics, blood work, and monitored fasting do the heavy lifting. Vogue named it among the 100 best spas in the world. People tend to arrive burned out and leave very quiet.

  5. Rank 7. Buck and Breck

    Cocktail Bar

The neon sign outside reads "closed," which is either a joke or a filter, depending on how you look at it. This intimate cocktail bar on Brunnenstraße is serious enough that a queue forms anyway, coats go in the wardrobe (not over a chair), and nobody inside seems to mind the theater of getting in. The kind of place that makes Berlin feel like it invented the cocktail bar and let everyone else borrow the idea.

  6. Rank 8. Becketts Kopf

    Cocktail Bar

A glowing portrait of Samuel Beckett in the window is what you look for, and once inside you'll find two small, dimly lit rooms and a bar counter barely wide enough for two people to work behind without renegotiating their relationship. This Prenzlauer Berg cocktail bar has the feel of being invited into someone's living room, because in a way you have been: the couple who run it make hospitality feel less like a job and more like a genuine impulse.

  7. Rank 9. Green Door

    Cocktail Bar

Past the literal green door in Schoeneberg, this narrow cocktail bar is lined in gingham and faux wood grain, with a wavy wall broken by a glowing drinks ledge, the whole thing sitting somewhere between a 1970s living room and a perfectly serious bar program. The long oak counter runs nearly wall to wall, and the cocktail list is thick enough to raise an eyebrow. The house slogan, "the power of positive drinking," does a lot of work setting expectations.

  8. A Scottish exclamation of excitement sits above the door of this relaxed sharing-plates restaurant in Frankfurt's Bahnhofsviertel, which earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The menu swings between rustic and refined, and eating with your hands is apparently on the table. Cocktails are taken seriously enough to warrant their own menu. It fills up fast, so a reservation is less a suggestion than a small act of self-preservation.

  11. The sushi counter fills up fast, which tells you something about a restaurant that also runs a full contemporary kitchen. VOX sits inside the Grand Hyatt near Potsdamer Platz, a wide-open modern dining room where the menu splits between Japanese sushi and European-leaning plates, à la carte or as a set. The bar behind it stocks a whisky collection broad enough to require a quiet moment of reflection before ordering.

  13. Dusky pink walls and a palm frond mural set the mood at this Charlottenburg cocktail bar, where everything is calibrated for the long sit-down. The team rotates the menu constantly, pulling inspiration from novels, songs, whatever they're into this season. Comfortable sofas or a front-row stool at the bar, your call. A Discovery on The 50 list.

  14. Rank 14. Hunky Dory Bar

    Cocktail Bar

Vintage rotary phones mounted in the booths let you order drinks without flagging anyone down, which is either charming or a portent of things to come, depending on your mood. This cocktail bar sits in Frankfurt's Bahnhofsviertel, where the old red-light district has quietly become a decent place to drink. Antique arcade machines fill the room, and the menu runs to tap pours, punches, and inventive originals alongside them.

  15. Rank 14. Kink

    Cocktail Bar

A former brewery in Prenzlauer Berg now houses this cocktail bar, where the kitchen-lab setup is visible through a large window and the gadgets are very much part of the show. Drinks lean technical, built around combinations like whisky with clarified mango and curry, and every cocktail can be ordered short or long. The room somehow reads as relaxed despite the science-fair ambition behind the bar.

  17. Rank 14. Mr. Susan

    Cocktail Bar

A kimchi popsicle floating in the house Michelada tells you everything you need to know about this cocktail bar in Mitte. The team behind a popular German-American-Korean street food operation opened it as a dedicated drinking spot, and the menu roams widely while Korean influences keep pulling it back somewhere specific. Boozy ice pops show up in summer, spiked with makgeolli rice wine, because of course they do.

  21. Rank 14. The Tiny Cup

    Cocktail Bar

The narrowest building in Frankfurt holds this cocktail bar on its ground floor, which starts each evening as an aperitif stop for the vegan restaurant upstairs before shifting gears into a proper drinks destination. Winter brings a focus on classics and riffs on them, with overflow spilling into a side nook called Tiny Window. It earned a Discovery listing from The 50. Small rooms make for short menus and fast bartender eye contact, which is rarely a bad thing.

  22. Rank 14. Toddy Tapper

    Cocktail Bar

The name comes from the fearless workers who scale tall palms in Sri Lanka to harvest the sap that becomes arrack, so you can guess what's running through the cocktail menu at this Agnesviertel bar. The spirit turns up in drink after drink, shifting between tropical and citrus registers. It's a tight, personal concept from a bartender who knows the ingredient from the inside out, which tends to make for a more interesting glass than the usual gin rotation.

  23. You follow pig tracks through a local pub called Kauz & Kiebitz, ring a doorbell, and suddenly you're in a speakeasy that leans into the truffle metaphor with dark wood, velvet, and gold without losing its sense of humor about any of it. Open four nights a week, Truffle Pig keeps the cocktail list inventive but approachable, the kind of bar where the room does the theatrics so the drinks don't have to. Named a Discovery by The 50.

  25. The front door is locked, buzzer required, reservation recommended, which is either thrilling or annoying depending on your mood. Le Lion is a serious cocktail bar in Hamburg with two rooms: a plush downstairs lounge where the bartenders work with quiet focus, and the Pine Room above, where the bar cuts through the center and guests literally walk through it to reach their seats. The performers are the point here, and they know it.

  26. The highball glasses here are 220ml, which is basically a tall person's thimble, and that's the whole philosophy in miniature. The Boilerman is a dive bar in Eppendorf run by the same person behind the very formal Le Lion, and the contrast seems deliberate. Bottled beers, American whiskey, and those precise little highballs fill the menu. Neighborhood regulars and cocktail nerds occupy the same barstools without anyone making it weird.

  27. Rank 30. Barroom

    Cocktail Bar

A single room so small that on busy nights you simply don't get in, Barroom holds a handful of people at most, which means the lone bartender is close enough to overhear your problems without being asked. It sits east of the Isar, a taxi ride from the rest of the Munich bar circuit, so you're committing to the detour. Cosy is a polite word for it; intimate is more accurate.

  29. Rank 30. Kleines Phi

    Modern Cocktail Bar

The orange-braided flex of the Edison bulbs is strung with a precision that borders on obsessive, which tells you something about the people running this concrete-and-glass cocktail bar in Feldstraße. The industrial look softens in summer when the full glass front folds open and drinkers drift onto the terrace. There's also a cozy backyard for when the street gets loud.

  30. Rank 30. Lebensstern

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar above Café Einstein where the bartenders wear jacket and tie and seem to shake drinks in rhythm with the mellow jazz on the jukebox. The back bar holds what might be the most gin bottles you've seen in one place, with vodka, whisky, and tequila collections filling the adjoining rooms. The crowd skews older and bookish, the kind that actually reads the spirits menu.

  31. A cocktail bar on a quiet residential street that somehow works as both a pilgrimage site for serious Negroni drinkers and a local hang for people who just want somewhere good to land on a Tuesday. The Campari ambassador who runs it has scaled up with each move, which means more room and a sharper team behind the bar. Order a Negroni, obviously, but nobody's going to stop you from ordering another.

  32. Rank 30. Schumann's

    Cocktail Bar

  33. Floor-to-ceiling windows face out onto Weserstraße, one of Neukölln's long, bar-every-other-door streets where someone is always playing music on the pavement. Tier is a cocktail bar done up in hunting-lodge-meets-art-deco, dim-lit and playing old rock, which makes it feel more settled than the DIY living-room spots around it. The neighborhood runs young and restless, and this is where they land when they want an actual bar.

  34. The back bar looks like an apothecary, all premium bottles and small wooden drawers, which sets the tone for what follows. This intimate cocktail bar fits about thirty people under a bronze ceiling with banquette seating along the grey walls, but the right stool at the far end of the bar, where the drinks are actually assembled, is the seat to take. Small, serious, and easy to linger in.

  35. Rank 40. Bar Amano

    Cocktail Bar

Bird of paradise flowers in expensive vases, champagne in trough-sized ice buckets: Bar Amano does not pretend to be a dive. It's a hotel cocktail bar in Mitte with a lengthy list and bartenders happy to skip it entirely if you just tell them what you're drinking these days. The bay windows along the edge of the room are a good perch for watching Auguststraße do its thing.

  36. The hook at Boilerman is the highball, executed with the kind of seriousness that makes you reconsider whether you've ever had one before. This cocktail bar inside the 25 Hours Hotel in HafenCity is the larger, second outpost of a Hamburg original, and it carries the same philosophy: one format, done obsessively well. The waterfront crowd tends toward the effortlessly cool, which is either inspiring or mildly exhausting depending on the night.

  37. Two wire-sculpture monkeys greet you at the bar inside Das Stue Hotel, which backs onto the Tiergarten and is one of the few places in Berlin where the unwritten dress code tilts toward "actual effort." The lobby flows in with its glass cases of wooden animal carvings and shoes, but the bar itself goes clean and spare, all glass walls and open courtyard. Berlin is a relaxed city; this place hasn't gotten the memo, which is exactly the point.

  38. Rank 40. Falk's Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The rococo plaster ceiling alone justifies pushing past the hotel lobby. Falk's Bar is a cocktail bar in the grand European tradition, all gilt mirrors and ornate walls around a central island bar, tucked inside the Bayerischer Hof. The room has a way of making you feel underdressed even when you aren't, so most guests seem to arrive having planned the outfit in advance.

  39. Rank 40. Galander

    Cocktail Bar

The owner built and decorated the room himself, then showed up in a waistcoat and bow tie to serve cocktails in it, which tells you almost everything about this cocktail bar in Kreuzberg. The space is comfortable rather than grand, with an upright piano at the back that gets used. It occupies an old German kneipe, and the bones of that neighborhood local are still very much present, which only makes the carefully made drinks feel more at home.

  40. A fresco of a woman extending a cocktail with the words "Mon Cheri" covers one wall, and the plastered ceiling carvings look like they took someone's entire back problem to complete. This small cocktail bar near Stuttgarter Platz occupies what was, by local account, a former red-light establishment, though the art nouveau restoration has thoroughly rebranded the premises. Come for the room as much as the drink.

  41. Three gold lampshades hang over the sunken bar like a chandelier that made a sensible decision. This cocktail bar sits tucked into the grand lobby of a five-star Munich institution, past the marble and the hush, in a pocket of red leather armchairs that feels borrowed from a private club. The hotel around it skews old-school and a little formal, but the bar wears that well.

  42. Rank 40. Immertreu

    Cocktail Bar

Silver chalices, a swizzle stick on the bar top, and a heavy cigar lighter in the bartender's hand set the tone at this Prenzlauer Berg cocktail bar. Smoking is legal in Berlin, and the team here leans into that with quiet theatrics. The technique behind the bar is precise and unhurried, the kind you watch without meaning to. A small, considered room where the drinks are taken seriously and the flourishes earn their place.

  43. Rank 40. Pacific Times

    Cocktail Bar

Dark wood and candlelight fill a handsome corner building near the River Isar, and Pacific Times takes the brief seriously. It's a cocktail bar with a long spirits list that notes, charmingly, whether each bottle came from a pot still or a continuous one. Classics are stirred or shaken as they should be, draught beer rounds out the options, and the whole operation shares DNA with the sister bar Barista down the road.

  45. Rank 40. Salut!

    Dive Bar

Tiffany lamps, glitter balls, and oil paintings share wall space with mounted boxes of trinkets, and somehow the whole mishmash holds together. Salut! is a neighbourhood bar on a Schöneberg street where graffitied apartment blocks meet boutique storefronts. Silent retro film clips play on the wall behind the bar, VW Beetles and bell-bottomed couples, scored only by whatever's on the stereo. The kind of place that feels like it's always been there.

  46. Rank 40. Saphire Bar

    Cocktail Bar

A former greengrocer's shop turned cocktail bar, Saphire now trades in brushed stainless steel and low-slung cream banquettes rather than root vegetables. The menu runs deep through classics, but the house specialty called Züchtigungsphantasien, which translates loosely as "disciplinarian fantasies," is what most people end up ordering. It's a berry mojito situation, which is either reassuring or a mild anticlimax depending on what you were expecting.

  47. Rank 40. The Grand

    Cocktail Bar

A granite bar the size of a small continent anchors this cocktail bar tucked around an internal courtyard in a townhouse that gives nothing away from the street. The room runs dark leather and dim light, and the menu leans into what it calls "restorative" drinks, fizzes and long pours served in bulbous wine glasses. The bleak façade is almost the point, keeping out anyone who needs a sign to find it.

  48. Bamboo walls, puffer fish hanging from a matted rush ceiling, and hand-carved tiki poles set the mood before you've even ordered. This basement tiki cocktail bar beneath the Hotel Bayerischer Hof is the Munich outpost of the long-running global chain, which means an oversized illustrated drinks menu and tan leather banquette seating that makes the whole thing feel pleasantly, deliberately out of time.

  49. Rank 40. Victoria

    Cocktail Bar

The narrow room runs almost wall to wall with bar counter, lined with leather stools and framed by booth seating at each end. Victoria is a sleek cocktail bar on Potsdamer Strasse, a stretch that doesn't exactly telegraph "upmarket lounge," which may be why the crowd that found it feels faintly proprietary about the place. Dark wood panels, modern art, low light, the general sense that someone thought hard about this.

  50. Rank 40. Würgeengel

    Cocktail Bar

Named for the Buñuel film where dinner guests find themselves mysteriously unable to leave, this Kreuzberg neighborhood bar operates on exactly the same principle. You go for one drink. You stay for several, helped along by the fact that the Italian restaurant next door will send food over. Nobody seems to mind being stuck in the cul-de-sac off Oranienplatz. That's rather the point.

  51. Rank 58. Gainsbourg

    Cocktail Bar

A red velvet curtain parts and you're suddenly in a dimly lit, jazz-soaked room with clay walls hung in black-and-white photos of the man himself. Gainsbourg is a cocktail bar named after Serge, styled as an "American" bar but feeling more like a Paris side street, which suits the namesake just fine. The hedge-lined terrace works on a warm night, but the real pull is the moody interior.

  52. Prints of all 43 U.S. presidents line the walls, a nod to the straw polls the Paris Harry's ran during American elections. This cocktail bar inside the Grand Hotel Esplanade leans hard into the Parisian original, borrowing the dancing flies logo and the college pennants behind the bar. It has all the right props and none of the patina, which is the unavoidable fate of a 1988 replica trying to out-charm a place that opened before World War One.

  55. Rank 63. Booze Bar

    Cocktail Bar

A wall of squashed Coca-Cola cans, arranged with a precision that suggests someone had strong feelings about recycling, sets the tone at this Friedrichshain cocktail bar. The curved ceiling follows the line of the bar counter below, bare brick runs to the back of the room, and the whole place manages to look deliberately rough without trying too hard. The drinks, despite the edgy trappings, lean toward the classics.

    The awards

  56. Leaded windows and collegiate crests on wood-panelled walls give this old-school cocktail bar a look borrowed, quite literally, from Harry's Bar Paris, which is exactly where it started. Been around forever by Munich standards, with a jazz pianist in the basement and a members-only cigar room upstairs. The kind of place where the bartender has probably been pouring longer than most of the clientele has been alive.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
