The best hotels in Metz, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. La Citadelle comes out on top.

  1. A 16th-century military barracks in the heart of Metz, now a hotel in Accor's MGallery collection, where the rooms are surprisingly modern and a little maze-like thanks to whatever the original soldiers were working with floor-plan-wise. The on-site restaurant, La Réserve, sits in the old provisions warehouse and runs a menu that splits the difference between bistro and fine dining, which is a neat trick for a building that once stored hardtack.

  2. Philippe Starck placed a traditional Lorraine farmhouse on top of a stark tower in Metz's Amphithéâtre district, and that's the whole pitch in one image. The 104-room hotel leans into the joke rather than explaining it, with natural wood, terracotta, and stained glass softening the monumental frame. The rooftop restaurant, La Maison de Manfred, sits inside the house itself, looking out over the city.

  3. Fourteen lodges split between a lakeside and a forest, some dressed in primary colors and bold graphics, others in bare birch with Scandinavian restraint. This design-forward nature retreat sits minutes from Metz but reads like a deliberate escape from it. A greenhouse holds the pool, sauna, hammam, and whirlpool, and the bistro restaurant wraps itself in glass to make the most of the grounds. The bar adjoins a proper display wine cellar, which is its own argument for lingering.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
