The best hotels in the Netherlands, according to the experts: the Forbes Travel Guide and the Michelin Guide have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Amsterdam.
More Less
De L'Europe Amsterdam and The Dylan Amsterdam hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Forbes Travel Guide next.
-
Six 17th-century canal mansions bolted together make for an unconventional hotel footprint, and the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam leans into it rather than papering it over. Plaques mark which merchant families lived where, the dividing lines between houses are still visible, and the bones of the place feel genuinely domestic. A Forbes Five Star, a Guerlain Spa, an indoor pool, and a personal concierge bring things firmly into the present.

A Forbes Four Star hotel where the Amstel River fills every window that faces south, De L'Europe has been hosting Amsterdam's moneyed class for what feels like forever. The old Rondeel building keeps its 19th-century bones while running thoroughly modern rooms, and a newer wing adds fourteen individually designed suites for guests who find symmetry a little boring. A spa with an indoor pool and a concierge who knows everyone round out the package.

A boutique hotel on the Keizersgracht canal, The Dylan sits in a building that was once a theater, which partly explains why it carries itself with a certain quiet drama. The design leans toward the cozy rather than the showy, and the Dutch concept of gezellig, that untranslatable sense of warmth and ease, runs through the whole place, from the tucked-away courtyard to rooms with canal views.

Twenty-five interlocking 17th and 18th-century canal houses on the Prinsengracht, all quietly pretending they weren't stitched together into a single hotel. The corridors genuinely surprise you. Rooms are plush, the inner gardens are calm, and the library stocks Pulitzer Prize winners, which feels either inspired or on the nose depending on your mood. The Nine Streets neighborhood and the Jordaan are right outside, which means excellent aimless wandering is basically required.

Stained-glass windows and preserved courtyards occupy a building that has served as a convent, a military offices, and city hall over the centuries, so the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam carries more layers than the average luxury hotel. The 178 rooms blend Dutch bones with French contemporary polish, butler-served suites sit at the top, and a spa with a hammam and indoor pool handles the rest.

The brown brick canal house gives nothing away from the street, but the interior is Dutch designer Marcel Wanders at full volume, all whimsy and plush detail with Alice in Wonderland references tucked into corners. This boutique hotel sits between the Jordaan and the Nine Streets, which means gallery-hopping and vintage shopping are essentially on the doorstep. Bluespoon handles both dining and cocktails when you're done.

A private club occupies the lower floors, and the luxury boutique hotel above it inherits that same air of velvet exclusivity. Nepalese carpets, French wallpaper, Italian curtains, and enough contemporary art to keep you busy on a rainy Tuesday fill rooms that lean hard into neo-Baroque opulence. The Rembrandt Suite sits where the Night Watch once hung before it moved across town, which sets the tone for a hotel that has been housing guests since Amsterdam was finding its footing. Rooms run small but bright after recent renovations, and the better ones look out over the Kloveniersburgwal canal. The Dutch breakfast spread and a marble staircase are the charming consolations for skipping the Jacuzzi. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

A former 17th-century courthouse on the Prinsengracht, fitted out by designer Piet Boon with a thousand original artworks and the kind of generously sized rooms Amsterdam doesn't usually deal in. The building's old lecture-hall bones, high ceilings and tall windows facing Oosterpark, give this luxury boutique hotel a perpetual back-to-school feeling, even in July. Housed in a restored university building, it holds the Michelin Guide's 2 Keys. Rooms run to bespoke beds and heated floors; one suite adds a grand piano and a marble soaking tub. A heated rooftop pool looking straight out over the Royal Palace gives you a sense of how W Amsterdam sets its sights. The hotel splits across two heritage buildings, one a former telephone exchange, the other a century-old bank, and the contrast holds inside too: the Exchange side runs lively and social, while the Bank building leans quieter and more indulgent, with a spa and a detox bar for guests who mean business about doing nothing.

The grand façade faces the Amstel River and has been doing so for what feels like forever, which sets the tone before you've even unpacked. This is a classic luxury hotel, Old World in the most unapologetic sense, all high ceilings and gilded interiors that make you feel like you've stumbled into a canal-house fever dream. A Michelin Key boutique hotel on the Singel canal where every one of the 14 rooms is themed around a historic Dutch trade, cartographers, shoemakers, and the rest. Vintage tools become light fixtures, airplane doors serve as wardrobes, and a penny-farthing turns up in the bathroom because why not. The revolving door, the original aviation-era ceilings near the lifts, even the old KLM reception desks are still here, which gives the place a mood that no decorator could fake. The Pillows chain has a gift for dropping polished boutique hotels into cities that don't get a lot of glossy tourism attention, and Zwolle is exactly that kind of find. It's a Michelin Selected boutique stay from the Private Mansions group, and "boutique" is doing heavy lifting here: you get a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchenette, and a claw-foot tub, full stop. Twenty-three rooms in a 19th-century canal house on the Prinsengracht, dressed in rich fabrics and classic objects rather than the freaky minimalism Amsterdam hotels love. It reads more like a discreet private residence than a hotel, with plush beds, vast bathrooms stocked with Chopard, and the kind of personalized attention a 23-room operation can pull off. The rest of the property threads a contemporary renovation through a pair of period canal houses and a modern wing, with Dutch-designed furniture and local art throughout. Five interconnected canal houses on the Herengracht, floor plans preserved in all their rambling, staircase-heavy glory. The Hoxton is a hotel that cheerfully names its smallest rooms "Shoebox" and means it, though clever layouts and canal views soften the blow considerably. The industrial East London aesthetic, all leather and brass against herringbone parquet, sits surprisingly well in Amsterdam. Lotti's brasserie and a two-level lounge bar keep the lobby worth lingering in.

A boutique hotel on the Keizersgracht that finally stops making you choose between canal-house atmosphere and modern design. The rooms pull off an unlikely trick, pairing lush materials against spare, austere forms in a way that reads as intentional rather than indecisive. Best rooms face the water. Two 18th-century canal townhouses just off the Museumplein, decorated with Barbara Broekman's custom wallpapers and enough contemporary color to stop the place from feeling like a period drama. The spiraling staircase is a feature, not a flaw, at this 17th-century canal house hotel on the Keizersgracht, though anyone who packed heavy may beg to differ. Designer Wim van de Oudeweetering layered it in bold color, lush fabric, and theatrical pattern, so the whole place reads baroque without quite being baroque. Rooms lean cozy by default, heritage floorplans being what they are, but the deluxes and suites open up, and some look straight onto the canal.

Art Deco bones with a postmodern personality, Hotel Mercier sits on a canal street and leans into color and ornament rather than the cool minimalism Amsterdam boutique hotels made their name on. Rooms run from an honestly labeled Small Double up to a Bridal Suite tucked under the eaves, all with walk-in showers and art that actually holds your attention. The all-day café Bonboon is a good reason to stay in.

A renovated 18th-century townhouse near Leidseplein that operates as a chic boutique hotel without pretending the old bones aren't still there. Rooms are small but uncluttered, and the irregular floor plans mean some face a quiet street, others a private garden. The bar runs from breakfast through last call. Bicycles are available, which in Amsterdam is less an amenity than a survival strategy.

The old Sweelinck Conservatorium building, with its double-height ceilings and century-old bones, turns out to make a genuinely good luxury hotel, which was probably not the architects' original intention. Split-level loft suites occupy what were once classrooms, Piero Lissoni handled the interiors with characteristic restraint, and the Museumplein address puts you steps from the P.C. Hooftstraat if restraint isn't your thing.

A Portuguese hotel chain moved into a pair of Neo-Renaissance buildings that once served as a town hall and archive, and the grand lobby with its coffered ceilings and soaring archways still reads more museum than check-in desk. Rooms are sleek and minimalist, some with Amstel River views, and a few top-floor suites tuck skylights up under the eaves. The indoor pool, glass-enclosed cocktail bar, and atrium restaurant round out a hotel that feels unusually spacious for Amsterdam.

The kitchen table, not the bed, is the organizing piece of furniture in Zoku's lofts, which tells you everything about what kind of hotel this is. Sliding screens separate the sleeping loft from a fully stocked kitchen and a proper workspace, right down to scissors and spare pencils. The communal floors add a bar, open kitchen, and shared work areas for when the deadline doesn't care that you're in Amsterdam.

The former headquarters of Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant, this design hotel on the Amstel has kept the building's open concrete bones and filled them with newsprint murals, raw finishes, and nine guest-designer rooms that range from treehouse to cinema boudoir. The rooftop bar Canvas turns into a dance floor on weekends, the basement cocktail bar doesn't open until 1am, and the hot tubs up top have views worth lingering over.

Behind a neoclassical Rotterdam facade, Hotel Âme runs on Japanese-Scandinavian minimalism, the kind where silence feels designed into the walls. Fourteen rooms vary in size but share the same unhurried calm, and the downstairs café pours Shokunin coffee from ceramics the co-founder threw herself. It is a small, quiet hotel that seems genuinely unbothered by the century outside its front door.

Rem Koolhaas's OMA designed not just the building but the interiors too, so the vision holds from lobby to Horizon Suite without a single awkward seam. Cork walls, terrazzo floors pieced together from offcuts, and reclaimed furniture that looks deliberate rather than cheap set the tone at this design-forward Rotterdam hotel just off Witte de Withstraat. The grand dame of The Hague sits on the stately Lange Voorhout boulevard, its marble columns, patterned carpets, and chandelier-hung restaurant making a strong case that understated was never really the point here. The woodwork and tilework in this 1938 Bauhaus building have never been touched, which makes the dark contemporary interiors feel like a deliberate argument rather than a renovation. Utrecht's original courthouse has been housing the guilty and the innocent since before the Norman Conquest, and the building still carries that weight. It's a boutique hotel now, where centuries of civic gravity meet colorful rooms decorated with archival photo prints from the city's legal past. The building's architects were told to maximize the top floors for views and the bottom floors for street life, then essentially minimize everything between, which is how Amsterdam ended up with one of its more quietly dramatic waterfront shapes. Inside the twenty-five room hotel, raw concrete ceilings meet floor-to-ceiling windows and a white-on-white palette warmed by parquet and contemporary art. A Gothic monastery with monks' cells converted into minimalist hotel rooms is not a concept that always lands, but the Kruisherenhotel pulls it off with considerable nerve. The old monastery garden provides a rare quiet corner in central Maastricht.

Rem Koolhaas's OMA designed this hotel as three stacked triangular volumes, each rotated slightly off the last, so it looks like a building that got bored and started improvising. Inside, the 650 rooms go full boutique riot, all color and attitude, which is the nhow signature move. A rooftop bar and a ground-floor restaurant cover both ends of the day, and three small gyms are there for the optimists. It sits next to Amsterdam's main convention center, which explains a lot about the lobby energy.

A 17th-century ophthalmology hospital turned boutique hotel, which gives the name a pleasing logic. The 36 rooms run across five styles, all muted palettes and minimalist lines that let the original exposed ceiling beams do the heavy lifting. Suites add high ceilings and city views. There's no on-site restaurant, but the sister hotel's spot is a short walk. Bikes are available to rent, which in Utrecht is less an amenity than a lifestyle requirement.

- #79 Hotel Monastère Maastricht 74.005
-
A 14th-century monastery converted into a hotel, with the restraint to restore the stonework and cloistered calm without turning the whole thing into a museum. The 52 rooms range from snug doubles to family-sized suites, all period bones with contemporary colors and properly modern comforts. Downstairs, Café Louis runs a full French kitchen sourcing locally, which is either a contradiction or just very Dutch pragmatism, depending on your mood.

Each of the eight rooms at this small, family-run canal hotel takes its personality from a different Utrecht museum, which sounds gimmicky until you see the stained glass and ceiling ornaments sitting alongside saturated walls and clean lines. The ground floor doubles as sunroom and lounge, and breakfast there runs long. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected hotels, which fits: it has the feel of someone's very well-curated house.

A three-century-old coaching inn on the old Delft-to-Hague road, now hemmed in by glass tech offices but still arriving like a gentle ambush of calm. Inside, the heritage bones have been kept and the rest thoroughly reinvented: minimalist interiors, design furniture, saturated color. Only 35 rooms, a full spa with pool and saunas, and a Parisian bistro on site. The Michelin Guide has it in its selected hotels.

A former fisherman's inn on the Durgerdam dike, a fifteen-minute drive from central Amsterdam but feeling much farther, this 14-room boutique hotel trades canal-house crowds for clapboard quiet on the water. The design studio Buro Belen kept the maritime bones and layered in contemporary art and unique architectural details room by room. Electric bikes are on loan for day trips, and the in-house restaurant handles dinner if you make it back.

Rooms here are acoustically tuned and fitted with audiophile-grade sound systems, which gives you a sense of the hotel's priorities from the moment you check in. Jaz in the City is a mid-to-large modern hotel that leans into street art and industrial-chic design rather than the obligatory watercolor prints. The Ziggo Dome is next door and the Ajax stadium is a short walk, so the neighborhood self-selects for people who came to do something.

The Market Hotel sits on the Grote Markt, Groningen's central square, inside a building that looks like it's been there for centuries and was finished last Tuesday. The hotel leans into the architectural nostalgia with full commitment while hiding a thoroughly modern spa, sauna, Turkish bath, and fitness center behind the period details. An all-day café, a bakery, and a rooftop terrace cover most hours and moods.

A 19-room hotel carved out of a magnificent old prison building in Zwolle, where the team behind De Librije added rooms largely so dinner guests wouldn't have to face the drive home. Butlers work the corridors, beds are by Auning, and junior suites add sitting rooms that start to feel genuinely residential. The restaurant access alone makes other hotel dining programs look apologetic.
