The best hotels in Indonesia, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, the Forbes Travel Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Bali and Jakarta.
More Less
Desa Potato Head Bali and Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Forbes Travel Guide next.
-
Perched above the Ayung River with rice terraces dropping away on every side, Mandapa is a Ritz-Carlton Reserve resort outside Ubud that keeps just 35 suites and 25 private pool villas. Each guest gets a personal patih butler, daily yoga and Balinese healing sessions run by local practitioners, and the option to trek the paddies or join a temple blessing. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a spot on the World's 50 Best Hotels list.

The facade is wrapped in over a million hand-pressed Balinese temple bricks, which sets the tone for what Desa Potato Head actually is: a resort that treats sustainability as a design brief, not a footnote. Six restaurants, a beach club built from reclaimed window shutters, sound stages, and art installations fill the grounds. It holds a spot on the World's 50 Best Hotels list, and the globetrotting creatives who fill it look exactly like you'd expect.

- #2 Desa Potato Head Bali (this place) 87.4
- #3 Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta 86.6
-
An all-suite luxury hotel inside Capital Place, a tower designed by César Pelli, with interiors by Alexandra Champalimaud that lean into Jakarta's spice-trading past: gilded accents, chandelier ceilings, and an Indonesian art collection that earns a slow lap of the lobby. The spa draws on local treatments, and the restaurants and bars tilt regional. Service here runs at the anticipatory end of the Four Seasons dial, so don't be startled when your preferences precede you.

Eighteen acres of terraced gardens slope down to the Ayung River, and the resort grows much of what ends up on the plate, eggplant and lemongrass among them. At 60 rooms it runs small for a Four Seasons, so the pools, restaurants, and pair of spas all feel like they belong to you rather than a convention. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a 50 Best Most Admired Hotel Group Award.

Every villa comes with its own private pool, which does make the infinity pool overlooking the bay feel almost unnecessary. This Forbes Five Star resort sits just across the bay from the airport, so the beach begins almost immediately. Complimentary water sports and beachside dining fill the days, and the place manages to feel romantic and family-friendly at once, a trick most resorts attempt and few pull off quietly.

Perched on a clifftop nearly 500 feet above the Indian Ocean at Bali's southern tip, this Forbes Five Star resort makes the setting the main event. Sixty-odd villas and mansions blend Milanese furniture and traditional Balinese craft in a way that somehow doesn't feel like a mood board. Frangipani-scented paths wind down through volcanic gardens to the water, and the buggy ride to your villa is its own quiet ritual.

Hand-dyed batik fabrics on the beds and a rotating Indonesian art collection signal that this luxury hotel, a Forbes Four Star property in the Kuningan business district, is doing something more considered than the standard five-star playbook. The design team behind La Mamounia and The Peninsula Paris shaped the interiors, and the six dining and drinking venues lean into local flavors. The Mulia's name means "noble" in Indonesian, and the property commits to that brief with what feels like religious conviction, starting with an actual chapel surrounded by reflecting pools at the entrance. This Forbes Five Star all-suite resort sits on a beachfront stretch of Nusa Dua, where every suite has a Jacuzzi balcony and a butler on call round the clock. Six pools and four restaurants are shared across the neighboring sister properties, so leaving your room is at least logistically encouraged.

Each of the 23 tents at this luxury tented lodge in Ubud's jungle ravine is dressed to a different theme, from baking utensils to film-set props, courtesy of designer Bill Bensley, who clearly considers restraint someone else's problem. It holds a Forbes Four Star rating. The above-ground rainforest pool cuts through the canopy, each tent has its own plunge pool, and the whole thing reads less like a resort than an elaborate, extremely comfortable fever dream.

The off-white facade stands out against the surrounding tower blocks, which is either a design choice or a quiet flex, probably both. The long, shaded driveway into this Aman resort in Kedewatan does most of the work before you've even checked in, trading Ubud's motorbike chaos for birdsong. A gleaming glass tower in Jakarta's Golden Triangle that hides a polished-stone lobby hung with oversized Hendra Gunawan canvases inside. This luxury hotel earns its Michelin Key, with rooms that feel genuinely timeless despite the high-rise city views, a spa complex thorough enough to lose a day in, and a Writers Bar modeled on the Raffles Singapore original. It also connects directly to a shopping and theatre complex, so leaving is technically optional.

Freestanding villas built as joglo, the traditional teak houses of Java, sitting quietly in the residential neighborhood of Umalas rather than jostling for beachfront. Each villa runs large enough to feel like a small hotel, with clover-shaped pools, lotus ponds, feng shui gardens, and outdoor showers off every bedroom. Seminyak's shops and cocktail bars are minutes away, though the design seems engineered to make you forget they exist. Michelin Key holder.

Antique Javanese houses lifted whole from Java and reassembled on a Balinese hillside is a fairly audacious opening move for a boutique eco-resort, but Bambu Indah keeps going. Rooms range from treetop tents to the Copper House, open on one side to the jungle canopy below. The whole property climbs a riverside hillside above Ubud, and the restaurant's communal tables serve farm-to-table Balinese cooking to guests who've already surrendered to the concept.

A triple-tiered infinity pool descending toward the ocean gives you the general idea of this clifftop all-villa resort in Uluwatu, well clear of Bali's busier south. All 123 villas lean into Hindu-Javanese architecture: duck-egg shutters, beamed double-height ceilings, deep freestanding tubs. The spa houses Bali's first Royal hammam, and the clifftop restaurant, Akasa, has the kind of ocean views that make you forgive an ambitious menu. The Michelin Guide has it among its Selected Hotels.

Every suite at this 38-room boutique hotel comes with a Japanese soaking tub, which is either an unexpected design flex or a very good reason to stay in. Set in the jungle just outside central Ubud, Bisma Eight layers minimalist Japanese influence over classic Balinese craft. A Danish hospitality group running a boutique resort on the outskirts of Ubud is a strange pitch, but the Scandinavian modernism sits surprisingly well against Balinese villa architecture. Six private villas with hand-carved doors and North Sumatra rooflines sit quietly between Canggu's surf-town buzz and Pererenan's rice fields, close enough to the restaurant strip to walk, far enough to forget it exists. Desa Hay is a small boutique resort where a favorite song plays at check-in and the minibar refills itself daily. The open-air restaurant moves from Indonesian staples to Mediterranean without fuss, and the bar leans into local herbs and fruit.

Steps from Kuta Beach, MAMAKA by Ovolo is a luxury hotel that leans hard into the idea that grown-ups shouldn't have to pay for their morning coffee or happy-hour drinks. Rooms run in white, navy, and aquamarine with raffia lamps and sea-facing windows; the rooftop infinity pool is lined in blue tile, and a Rip Curl surf school waits at the shoreline. Selected by the Michelin Guide, it draws a crowd that surfs at noon and orders tropical drinks shortly after.

Sumba is what Bali looked like before anyone really found it, and Cap Karoso leans into that quietly. This boutique resort pairs modernist architecture with indigenous Sumbanese craft and materials, the contrast feeling considered rather than decorative. Studios and suites run spacious and chic; villas come with private pools. The kitchen sources from the hotel's own farm, and a smaller restaurant runs rotating residencies with visiting French chefs. A giant rooster sculpture crowns the open-air restaurant here, visible for miles, and it sets the tone perfectly for this resort on Lombok's northwest coast. The aesthetic is unapologetically maximalist, rooted in ancient Majapahit history, with antique-filled villas, boulder-carved bathtubs, and private plunge pools. A 200-year-old temple sits on the grounds. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. Lombok is quieter than Bali, and this place leans hard into that bargain.

Oceanfront villas on Waecicu Beach look straight out at the islands of Komodo National Park, where the dragons are, which sets the tone for this resort immediately. The rooms run from quietly extravagant to full private-pool territory, there are three restaurants and a spa, and the team can arrange snorkeling, diving, or a trip to Rinca Island to see the famous lizards. A boutique hotel in Old Town Jakarta where every suite is essentially a curated museum room, assembled over years by a obsessive collector to preserve Peranakan heritage. Antiques and ancestral artifacts fill the 25 rooms, and the coffee comes from the family's own East Java plantation. Jajaghu Restaurant does bold Asian plates in vintage Batavia surroundings. Perched on a forested slope above the Campuhan river valley, this Ubud resort looks out over its own working rice fields, tended by a farming couple whose names the restaurant quietly borrows. Villas and suites have four-poster beds, thatched roofs, and walls that open wide to the jungle canopy. The Wana Jiwa Spa sits on the riverbank as a villa unto itself, open to outside guests too, which is its own kind of hint about the setting.

A boutique resort a short walk from Ubud Palace, designed by Balinese architect Popo Danes, whose carved detailing and hand-painted murals referencing the island's creative traditions run from the high-ceilinged suites to the private pool villas overlooking jungle. Terraced down a cliff above the Indian Ocean on Bali's southern peninsula, this resort earns its drama without trying. Most suites and villas look straight out to sea, some with private pools, and the three restaurants serve Indonesian classics with the same view doing most of the work.
