Sections

The best places to stay and do in Montpellier, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and Le Fooding have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Richer De Belleval comes out on top.

More Less

Domaine de Biar and Bleu hold the next two places. Le Fooding and the Michelin Guide show up on more of this list than any other guide.

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. The awards

  2. A lovingly restored country estate outside Montpellier, spread across 120-odd acres of meadows, vineyards, and old-growth trees that take the concept of a garden quite seriously. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys. Rooms differ wildly, from Belle Époque reds and lavenders to grayscale rooms furnished with accordion lamps, which is a choice. Freestanding tubs, hidden doors, and private terraces appear throughout, and the on-site restaurant leans hard into Slow Food principles.

  7. A working vineyard just outside Montpellier where the roses and the pool and the sundeck conspire to make you feel you've earned a week off. This boutique hotel holds twenty-six rooms and suites designed by Raymond Morel, whose eye runs more toward city chic than rustic charm, which turns out to be a nice surprise out here in the Languedoc countryside. A full spa and a restaurant round things out. Michelin has given it one Key.

  8. Rooms and apartments open directly onto fairway or garrigue at this contemporary golf and spa resort outside Montpellier, built around bioclimatic principles rather than bolted-on green credentials. The 84 rooms, apartments, and a private villa draw natural light and air through considered design, while permaculture gardens supply a kitchen leaning Mediterranean. The spa, the shared terraces, and the quiet corners all coexist without crowding each other out.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
