The 38 Best Places to Drink and Stay in Montréal

The best places to drink and stay in Montréal, according to the experts: The 50, Spirited Awards, and Tastet have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Atwater Cocktail Club comes out on top.

More Less

Four Seasons Montreal and The Cloakroom hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Spirited Awards close behind.

  1. Glittery couches, a backbar stacked with hard-to-find agave and sugar-cane spirits, and DJs on weekends make the setup clear before the first drink arrives. This is a cocktail bar that takes its mixing seriously, with odd, exciting combinations sitting alongside mastery of the classics. The kitchen turns out proper bar food, too. North America's 50 Best Bars has it listed, and the crowd skews local, which is usually the better sign.

  2. A dark glass tower above the Golden Square Mile, with Marcus Samuelsson running the food and a Guerlain spa waiting when the city wears you out. The hotel leans hard into a boudoir-meets-enchanted-forest aesthetic, all pink hues, velour, and a wraparound marble bar that makes leaving feel slightly irresponsible. Private residences on the upper floors mean some guests never actually leave, which tracks.

  3. Rank 1. The Cloakroom

    Cocktail Bar

Hidden behind a menswear shop in a grand old Golden Square Mile building, this 25-seat cocktail bar operates on the tailor's principle: no menu, just a conversation about what you feel like, followed by something made precisely for you. The bar team draws on a deep house library of amari, liqueurs, and tinctures alongside vintage spirits to put it together. Canada's 100 Best named it the top bar in the country in 2026.

  4. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton got married here, which tells you most of what you need to know about the register this hotel has always played in. A grand, old-school property anchoring the Golden Square Mile, it sits close to the Museum of Fine Arts and a stretch of serious shopping. The rooms run quietly luxurious, the service formal without being stiff, and the whole place carries the easy confidence of somewhere that has never needed to explain itself.

  5. Rank 5. Bar Numéro

    Modern Cocktail Bar

The stainless steel bar runs through the center of the room, with bartenders working inside it rather than behind it, so you're surrounded by the action whether you want to be or not. It's a cocktail bar on Saint-Laurent doing force-carbonated highballs and tableside martinis poured into glasses refreshed mid-drink to hold temperature, but a Labatt 50 sits on the menu without irony. Named a Regional Top 10 Honoree at the Spirited Awards, and already on Canada's 100 Best Bars list.

  6. John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their famous bed-in for peace here, which means this downtown Montreal hotel has been living off that story ever since, though a massive renovation has given it some new ones. The lobby pulls in local art and a genuinely urban energy, the rooms are warm rather than grand, and a 24-hour wellness center handles whatever the conference schedule did to you. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  7. Rank 5. The Coldroom

    Cocktail Bar

A painted duck above a handleless door is the only sign you're in the right place. Ring the bell, wait, then descend into a 19th-century warehouse that now runs as an intimate speakeasy in Old Montreal. The bar team builds spirit-forward cocktails tailored to your mood, and the room rewards the kind of night that starts with "just one." North America's 50 Best Bars placed it at number 97 in 2026.

  8. Rank 8. Bar Bello

    Italian Cocktail Bar

A vintage vending machine stocked with eight bottled Negronis, including a rotating seasonal riff, is a pretty good thesis statement for an aperitivo bar. Bar Bello is an ode to Italian drinking culture, all taralli, focaccia, and a long list of amari and vermouths alongside Sbagliatos, Garibaldis, and cocktails built for a large patio. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list. Come with a tolerance for bitterness and no plans until evening.

  9. Rank 8. Bar Bisou Bisou

    Cocktail Bar

Stone walls, whitewashed brick, and colourful tiles set the mood at this aperitivo bar tucked into Old Montreal. The list leans hard into sherry, vermouth, amaro, and obscure fortified wines, with low-ABV and spirit-free options that don't feel like an afterthought. Small plates are built to pair, not to fill. It landed on Canada's 100 Best Bars list, which tracks for a room where the drinks menu reads like a love letter to everything your wine shop keeps behind the counter.

  10. Rank 8. Bar Dominion

    Cocktail Bar

The original Art Deco tile floors and woodwork have been around forever, and the team behind Bar Dominion wisely left them alone. This is a gastropub with a serious cocktail program, the kind of room that feels like a grand hotel bar but where people actually stay for a second drink. The raw bar and steak frites handle the food side; the cocktails handle the rest.

  11. Wood panelling, mounted deer heads, and mismatched chairs set the tone at Le Majestique, a festive bar on The Main where the seafood tower arrives with theatrical intent. Industry regulars fill the room early, working through a deep list of natural wines, microbrews, and classic cocktails. The oysters stay hyper-fresh, but most people are here to drink well in a room that looks kitschy and acts like it means it.

  14. A neo-Renaissance mansion in the Golden Square Mile, built for one of the city's 19th-century power brokers and now operating as a luxury hotel. The bones of the original residence are hard to miss: grand proportions, ornate stonework, the kind of architecture that communicates wealth before you've touched a door handle. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. It sits well outside the old port's hotel cluster, which is either a selling point or a cab ride depending on your mood.

  19. Robot room service is either the future or a sign we've given up on human contact, and Hôtel Monville has committed fully to finding out. This sleek, tower-style hotel in downtown Montréal leans hard into the ultra-modern, with architecture that turns heads on a street where cobblestones are usually the draw. Selected by the Michelin Guide, it appeals to guests who'd rather book everything on an app than talk to anyone at check-in.

  20. A Marriott Autograph Collection hotel in downtown Montreal, Humaniti fills its rooms and corridors with works by Québécois artists alongside colorful Modernist interiors by Lemay + Escobar. An expansive spa, rooftop pool, and a restaurant and lounge run by celebrated local chef Jean-Sébastien Giguère round things out. It's the kind of hotel that has done its homework, which in this category is less common than it should be.

  22. A 36-room hotel on Rue Saint-Jacques where the art installations are the décor, not something hung on top of it. Rooms are open-plan with modular seating that converts from desk to lounge to dining corner depending on the hour, and projections and textural materials run throughout. It has the energy of a boutique hotel that genuinely cannot decide if it's a gallery, which, depending on your mood, is either a feature or a lot.

  28. The alabaster fireplace in the lobby glows like a lantern, which is a strange thing to find inside a ten-story Beaux-Arts building in Vieux-Montréal. That contrast is the whole point of the St. Paul Hotel: a seriously spare, design-magazine interior dropped into a grand historic shell. High ceilings and big picture windows help. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels, and the neighborhood alone earns its keep on a long weekend.

  33. Perpetual tropics in downtown Montreal, regardless of what February is doing outside. Le Mal Nécessaire is a sprawling cocktail bar with tall pillars, soaring ceilings, and a long polished bar that commits hard to the urban-equatorial bit. Drinks split neatly between breezy coconut-and-rum constructions and more serious, grown-up pours, so the crowd tends to contain both people unwinding and people who actually read the back of an amaro bottle.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
