Rank 1. Jewel of the South
Southern Cocktail Bar
A brandy crusta in a 19th-century Creole cottage on the edge of the French Quarter sets the tone for this cocktail bar, which took home the James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar in 2024. The room is unhurried and genuinely romantic, the kind of place that makes ordering a second drink feel like the responsible choice. The drinks lean into New Orleans' deep cocktail history without feeling like a museum.

Upscale Cajun & Creole
Absinthe fountains line the curved bar at this jewel-box cocktail bar steps from St. Louis Cathedral in the Lower Pontalba Building. Oysters and caviar share menu space with a martini that landed on Esquire's national list, and a vintage chandelier keeps the whole room at a glow. It opens at eleven in the morning and closes at ten, the upstairs neighbors having apparently drawn a firm line.

Rank 4. Brennan's
Cajun & Creole
This is the old-line Creole dining room on Royal Street where bananas foster was invented, and the servers still set it on fire at your table without losing track of your questions. It's fine dining in the jacket-and-good-posture sense, so you'll find yourself saying "powder room" without being asked. The bar program has James Beard attention of its own, and the Sazerac arrives the way it should.

Braised celery hearts with smoked beef tongue are a menu mainstay here, and they tell you everything: this is a French brasserie that means it. The chef owes more to Paris than to the French Quarter, though Gulf fish and red beans find their way in. His business partner runs one of the sharpest wine programs in town. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list in 2023, the same year Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants.

The signature scent is Southern magnolia, pumped through the lobby before you even spot the flowers. This Forbes Four Star hotel occupies a Beaux Arts building that spent its previous life as a department store, and the bones show in the best way: grand marble, a lush courtyard with a fountain, and guest rooms that feel lifted from a proper New Orleans mansion. Canal Street is right outside when you need it, and the jazz lounge is right inside when you don't.

Rank 7. The Sazerac Bar
Cocktail Bar
The Sazerac Bar holds the rights to both the Sazerac cocktail and the Ramos Gin Fizz, which says something about the confidence of the Roosevelt Hotel's lobby bar. Dark wood paneling, murals, and a long bar that has been drawing New Orleans in formal and informal attire for generations. It's sophisticated without being stiff, which is a harder trick than it sounds in a city that takes its drinks this seriously.

Rank 8. GW Fins
Seafood
Dry-aged swordfish is not something most seafood restaurants attempt, but it's the kind of move that tells you exactly what kind of place GW Fins is. This upscale French Quarter dining room goes deep on seasonal fish, running cuts like sheepshead and fish collars alongside the more expected. The chef's been a James Beard semifinalist, and the room draws people who came prepared to order carefully and stay a while.

Rank 8. The Elysian Bar
Cajun & Creole Cocktail Bar
The Elysian Bar is a cocktail bar in the Marigny, tucked inside a converted church-turned-hotel, where the atrium bar is so relentlessly yellow it feels like a secret study belonging to a pipe-smoking baron. Cajun and Creole small plates, like focaccia with honey butter, keep company with a Hibiscus 75. It's elegant without being stiff, and it made Food & Wine's list of top hotel bars in the country.

Rank 10. Cane & Table
Cajun & Creole
Rum drinks without a single plastic volcano or flaming garnish in sight. Cane & Table is a cocktail bar that calls itself "Proto Tiki," rooting its menu in the centuries of trade between rum-producing islands before the tiki craze gave everything a grass skirt. The room on Decatur Street feels genuinely New Orleans, which helps. Pisco Punch and signature coladas share the menu, and the whole thing moves like a history lesson you'd actually stay for.

Rank 10. Fritai
Haitian
Pulled pork pressed between two fried plantains, dressed with mango sauce and pikliz, is a reasonable introduction to what this Treme restaurant is doing with Haitian cooking. Fritai is a bright, welcoming room where the Caribbean flavors run vivid and the bar leans on clairin, the Haitian cane spirit that most New Orleans cocktail menus haven't caught up to yet. A James Beard semifinalist two years running.

Rank 12. Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29
Tiki-Style Gastropub
Jeff "Beachbum" Berry wrote the books that revived tiki culture, and then he went and opened a bar. Latitude 29 sits inside a French Quarter hotel, all mid-century lines and lauhala matting, with a chunky oak bar backed by a tiki map of the world. It leans sophisticated rather than plastic-hula-girl, and the rum and fruit cocktails are the serious kind, made by people who know exactly what they're doing.

Rank 12. Paladar 511
Italian
Tuna crudo in charred green tomato aguachile is not the Italian that built this city's red-gravy reputation, and that's the whole point. This trattoria in the Faubourg Marigny does vegetable-driven antipasti, fresh pasta, Neapolitan pizza, and roasted meat with a lightness that locals treat as a minor civic relief. The New York Times named it among the 25 best restaurants in New Orleans, which feels about right for the neighborhood canteen that quietly rewrote the local Italian conversation.

Rank 12. The Carousel Bar & Lounge
Cocktail Bar
The bar actually rotates, one full revolution every fifteen minutes, carried on 2,000 steel rollers by a quarter-horsepower motor. It's a cocktail bar inside the old Monteleone Hotel on Royal Street, and the canopy above the 25-seat circular bar was carved by a carousel craftsman, which explains a lot. New Orleans being New Orleans, nobody finds this strange. It's a strong argument for arriving early enough to feel the room slowly turn.

The Carousel Bar in the lobby actually revolves, one full rotation every fifteen minutes, which tells you almost everything about the Hotel Monteleone's commitment to a good time. This old-school French Quarter institution has marble floors, brass fixtures, and enough chandeliers to give the lobby its own weather system. A rooftop pool and full spa mean you can stay put, which, given the address on Royal Street, is a genuine temptation.

Rank 16. Manolito
Classic Cuban
The blenders run constantly at this French Quarter-edge daiquiri bar, which lifts its whole aesthetic from Havana's legendary Floridita. The decor, the food, and the drinks list all commit to the bit: Cuban classics like El Presidentes and daiquiris in several frozen variations, served in a room small enough that you're on nodding terms with the bartender by round two. A Spirited Awards Regional Honoree for Best U.S. Cocktail Bar.

Crystal chandeliers run the full length of the marble lobby, which makes entering feel like an event before you've even checked in. This grand Waldorf Astoria hotel has been around forever, and the bones show it, from the vintage timepieces anchoring the corridor to the historic Sazerac Bar just off the lobby. The rooms are plush and numerous, the staff quietly expert at making famous guests disappear.

Fourteen rooms and suites dressed in retro European style, split between a busy French Quarter street and a quiet inner courtyard, with just enough eclectic detail to make you feel like you're staying somewhere rather than merely sleeping somewhere. Frozen Irish Coffees come out of a slushie machine here, and locals have been treating that as a perfectly reasonable life choice for a long time. Erin Rose is a small, dark Irish bar just off Bourbon Street, walls thick with photos, neon, and memorabilia that nobody has bothered to organize and nobody wants removed. Guinness and Harp on tap, conversation guaranteed from both sides of the bar, and a crowd that skews more neighborhood than tourist strip.

A former sugar factory at the quieter, river-facing edge of the French Quarter, ONE11 is a hotel whose exposed brick, timber joists, and original columns do most of the decorating. Rooms lean into the loft feeling without the austerity, landing somewhere warm and a little theatrical, which fits the neighborhood. Batture Bistro + Bar handles everything from morning coffee to late-night cocktails. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected New Orleans hotels.

Killer Po Boys started as a pop-up, which explains why it still feels like a place that has something to prove. Order at the counter, grab a table, and find a bottle of Crystal hot sauce waiting for you. The bread comes from Dong Phuong bakery, and the shrimp are seared rather than fried, dressed with sriracha aioli and pickled slaw. Barbecue chicken confit and a cheddar omelet round out a menu that takes the French Quarter's most obvious sandwich seriously.

Bayona is a Creole restaurant in a French Quarter cottage, and the courtyard out back is the move. It's all plants and cobblestones, enough of them to make a Roman side street feel underpaved. Tables here are for lingering, not turning, so you can take your time with a friend or two without being swept along by a tourist parade. Expect a proper sit-down dinner, so dress like someone who's about to be served duck liver pâté.

Budsi's is a sit-down Thai restaurant on a brick corner in the Marigny, a long way from the pop-up it started as. It's built for splitting things, so bring friends and let the table fill with wings, satays, and dumplings. Everyone gets their own curry or noodle dish, because sharing has limits. Going solo for a cocktail and larb is allowed, but the table does the real work here. The Infatuation includes it on its list of the city's best restaurants.

Chapter IV is a modern Creole restaurant from the family behind Dooky Chase, which means the gumbo arrives with a dark roux and a full cast of sausage, shrimp, chicken, and crab. A black and white marble floor runs from the front door all the way back through the bar, past the restaurant, and out into a quiet courtyard, putting a lot of physical distance between you and Bourbon Street without much effort. Beer Bar
Frenchmen Street runs on live music, but D.B.A. is there for the beer, the spirits, and the wine, with bands as a bonus rather than the point. Two redwood-lined rooms share a central bar, one leaning lounge, one leaning jazz club, both dim and ceiling-fan slow. The New York sister bar genes show a little, which gives this New Orleans dive a slightly unlikely polish that the regulars seem happy to ignore.

Three blocks from Bourbon Street and operating at a different frequency entirely, The Black Penny is a low-key craft beer bar with more than 70 canned options and the kind of room that actually makes you want to stay. The shattered-glass bar-top with a built-in refrigerator for fresh produce is a good sign you're in a proper cocktail bar, not just somewhere with a drinks menu. The room is moody and low-lit, with funky music competing gently with classic films on a flat screen, Gone with the Wind one moment, Indiana Jones the next. The polystyrene ceiling tiles are a Quiznos inheritance, which gives the whole effort a certain scrappy charm.

Cold Amber beer, live jazz, and a room that looks like nothing has been touched since the Nixon administration. Fritzel's is a no-frills jazz pub on Bourbon Street that skips cocktails, skips mood lighting, and skips any pretense of being a bar that cares about its wine list. The Hurricane, that tall, rum-soaked fruit bomb, is said to have been born here, though New York City has lodged a competing claim.
