The Best Places in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera & around

  1. Rank 1. Paradiso

    Cocktail Bar

You get in through the freezer door at the back of a pastrami shop, which tells you most of what you need to know about Paradiso's priorities. The narrow wood-panelled cocktail bar beyond it has a DJ, elaborate glassware that borders on theatrical, and a second secret room behind the bathroom mirror, because one hidden bar was apparently not enough. It sits at number four on the World's 50 Best Bars list.

  2. Rank 2. Dr. Stravinsky

    Cocktail Bar

Infusing jars line the walls and the menu is organized by production technique, which tells you everything about the kind of cocktail bar Dr. Stravinsky is. Fermentation and distillation are the house obsessions, so expect kombucha, kefir, and a vodka distilled with soil turning up in your glass. It has a spot on the World's 50 Best Bars list, and the lab-equipment decor makes that feel less surprising than it should.

  3. Rank 3. Aldea

    Cocktail Bar

A rotary evaporator behind the bar is either a red flag or a very good sign, and at this cocktail bar on an El Born corner, it's the latter. The team uses the lab-grade distiller to pull flavor from oyster shells, nachos, and roasted peppers, then serves the results in quietly classic glasses. Ranked among Europe's 50 Best Bars, Aldea drinks like a science project that remembered to be delicious.

  4. Rank 4. Marlowe

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar in El Born that spent decades as Gimlet before the current team renamed it Marlowe, a nod to Raymond Chandler's gimlet-sipping detective. The Philip Marlowe connection is a bit of a wink given the original bar's legacy, and regulars still order gimlets even though the drink rotated off the quarterly menu. Small, unhurried, and staffed by people who clearly enjoy what they're doing.

  5. Rank 5. Creps al Born

    Cocktail Bar

  6. Rank 6. Can Bo

    Tapas Spanish

A tapas and wine bar tucked into a grand historic building on Via Laietana, with tall windows and Catalan Modernist detailing that make it feel like someone's very tasteful living room. The menu runs to sharing plates that lean on good local ingredients, and the wine list clears 150 labels, which is either an embarrassment of riches or a commitment problem, depending on your afternoon schedule.

  7. A chalkboard of daily specials is the first thing worth reading at this seasonal restaurant tucked into a narrow Gothic Quarter lane. The ground floor wraps around an open kitchen where you can watch the cooks work, while the upstairs dining room peers down at the whole scene like a mezzanine at a small theater. The menu runs traditional Catalan cooking updated just enough to feel considered rather than museum-piece.

  8. Rank 6. Contraban

    Contemporary French

Tucked into the Gothic Quarter inside the Wittmore hotel, Contraban runs a contemporary restaurant built on classical French technique, with a menu the kitchen frames around emotions: freedom, surprise, frustration. Whether the cod fritters care about feelings is an open question, but the indoor terrace is genuinely atmospheric in the way only old-city spaces manage. Weekend brunch, too, if you need somewhere to sit with your complicated morning.

  10. Rank 6. Fronda Pasaje

    Vegetarian American

A vegetarian restaurant in El Born where the chef, an Argentine biologist by training, treats plant-based cooking like a lab experiment you actually want to eat. Some dishes arrive as trompe l'oeil illusions, which sounds gimmicky until you're fooled by one. The menu runs à la carte or as set menus, and Santa Maria del Mar is just around the corner if you need to walk off the conviction that vegetables are, in fact, the point.

  11. Rank 6. Ten's

    Modern Spanish

Jordi Cruz's minimalist gastro-bar near the waterfront runs on the premise that a tapa can be a precise, considered thing without losing its nerve. The menu moves between individual bites and sharing plates, with an all-table tasting menu called Ten's if you want the full picture. The room is spare and deliberate, which suits food that is doing a lot of quiet thinking while looking casual about it.

  13. Rank 13. Cal Pep

    Spanish

The queue outside this old-school tapas counter in the Born is part of the deal, and regulars know to aim for a stool at the bar rather than a table. The kitchen pulls from whatever looks good that morning, so the menu shifts daily, built around razor clams, cuttlefish, and whatever the market delivered. The tortilla has its own reputation around here, and the tuna tartare is hand-chopped and left mostly alone, which takes confidence.

  14. Rank 13. Especiarium

    Cocktail Bar

Especiarium is a cocktail bar in El Born that builds its drinks around spices, which explains the Cardamom, served in a bowl shaped like the pod itself. The currykiri arrives crowned with a giant fruit vapor bubble that's best popped with your nose, at some risk of sneezing. The staff are chatty and unhurried, and nobody minds if you just want a Negroni in the low-ceilinged room, which stays busy without getting packed.

  16. A wave-like mirrored ceiling does most of the decorating at this self-described "irreverent seafood tavern" in Ciutat Vella, where the day's catch sits on ice at an open bar and a robata grill does the heavy lifting. The menu runs from cured horse mackerel to braised tuna cheek, and the oyster-infused dry martini has developed its own small reputation. A handful of tables keeps it intimate, which is a polite way of saying book ahead.

  17. The wine bottles lining the walls aren't decoration so much as inventory, and on a busy night you'll be standing among them. This compact little wine bar sits across the square from Santa Maria del Mar, and the room is refreshingly scruffy for a place with a list this good, cavas and sherries alongside an eclectic international rotation. Grab a stool at the marble counter if one opens up; otherwise, glass in hand, you're on your feet.

  18. Rank 18. Eclipse Bar

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar on the 26th floor of the W Hotel, with the kind of panoramic sweep across Barcelona that makes you forgive the scene happening around you. Ricardo Bofill handled the interiors, and the crowd arriving after dark is exactly who you'd expect. Go early enough to catch the sunset before the DJs and the queue in the lobby below make the whole thing feel like a very stylish inconvenience.

  19. Blue-tiled walls, marble tables, and a zinc bar that has been pouring house cava since before anyone can remember: El Xampanyet is an old-school tapas bar on one of the prettiest streets in the Born. Anchovies in vinegar and fat green olives are the moves here, paired with cold glasses of cava. The kind of place where tourists and regulars agree for once, which is its own small miracle.

  20. Rank 18. G.M.T

    Cocktail Bar

Wood paneling, a mahogany counter, worn seats, and a cut-out of a bowler-hatted man peeping through blinds: GMT lands somewhere between a Fleet Street pub and a noir detective's waiting room. The cocktail bar took its name from a shortening of Gimlet, not the time zone, which tells you something about how seriously they take the bit. Soft jazz and low lighting keep the mood intact for anyone who shows up in a trench coat, ironically or otherwise.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
