The Best Places in Downtown & around

  1. Rank 1. kann

    Caribbean

Gregory Gourdet won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant here, which tells you the industry noticed what he was doing with Haitian cuisine long before most diners caught up. Kann is a full-service restaurant where dishes like griyo and legim carry the weight of actual culinary history, not just a concept. The cooking draws on French technique and deep Haitian roots, and the menu quietly teaches you something without ever making you feel like you're in a lecture.

  2. Rank 2. Nodoguro

    Japanese

Each dinner follows a literal script, with courses named Acts I through V and a menu built around a short story or novel that changes every six weeks. Nodoguro is an intimate Japanese omakase tucked into a downtown building, where the chef composes each plate in front of you at the bar. Ryan Roadhouse sources his rice from Hokkaido, and the whole thing moves with the quiet precision of someone who has thought very hard about the order of things.

  4. Rank 4. MÅURICE

    Bakery

The quiche arrives as though it's never heard of the stodgy version you've had before, light and trembling where quiche has no business being either. MÅURICE is a French-leaning pastry luncheonette from chef Kristen Murray, drawing from French and Norwegian traditions for a small menu of smørbrød, soups, and sweets. The black pepper cheesecake has its own local mythology. A cold bottle of white at midday in downtown Portland, and nowhere else quite like it.

  5. Nong's is a counter-service Thai spot built around one dish, chicken and rice, which started life as a food cart before the paper-wrapped parcels earned it a brick-and-mortar home. You tear open the package and a cloud of ginger, garlic, and pandan fogs your glasses. Soft winter squash dissolves into the broth on the side, and the whole meal costs about what a movie ticket did in 2009. Eater put it on its All-Time 38 list.

  6. RingSide is a white-tablecloth steakhouse where the onion rings arrive piping hot and the martinis arrive cold enough to pass for a legal argument. The bar is sunken and dimly lit, with little booths made for settling in, and the Blazers are usually on, losing quietly. The menu runs to three kinds of Japanese Wagyu and a wine list the size of a hymnal. It also holds AAA Three Diamonds. Dress like you're staying.

  8. This Pearl District coffee shop roasts its own beans and takes cues from Korean cafe culture, which means the seasonal menu might involve shiso, gochujang, or a toasted rice latte with housemade syrup. The pour-overs are precise and the space is all polished concrete and floor-to-ceiling windows, so the laptop crowd settles in while neighbors dart through for matcha, as if the place were a pit stop.

  10. Rank 10. Higgins

    Portuguese

Portland's original farm-to-table restaurant has been around forever, and after a near-death experience a couple of years ago, a social media S.O.S. brought the regulars flooding back. The dining room is a proper sit-down affair, seasonal and ingredient-driven, with a rustic bistro in back that runs a serious burger and one of the better beer lists downtown. A block from the Arlene Schnitzer, it's the obvious pre-concert answer.

  11. A coffee shop built inside a former bus shelter, which explains the glass roof and the wraparound doors still in place. The drinks lean into ingredients like black sesame cream, mugwort, and ube alongside straight espresso for the unconvinced. Pastries come from Bakeshop, and the farmers market crowd pours in on weekends. A fine place to stand at the corner and feel like a local, even if the bus never comes.

  12. Rank 10. Lilia Comedor

    Pacific Northwest

Blue corn masa dumplings crowned with black trumpet mushrooms, marigold petals from the chef's garden, and a menu that changes every week: Lilia Comedor moves at the pace of what's actually growing. It's a relaxed sit-down restaurant where Mexican American cooking meets Pacific Northwest ingredients, handled with the kind of technical precision that makes the combination feel inevitable rather than conceptual.

  13. Light-roast single origins anchor the menu at this Alphabet District coffee shop, where the room manages to feel both polished and lived-in. The shelves are stacked with brewing gear and merch for the home obsessive, and regulars who already know their order fill the space with the easy hum of a neighborhood that's claimed its café. Eater named it among Portland's top coffee shops, which will surprise no one who's been in on a Tuesday morning.

  14. Rank 16. St. Jack

    Neo-Bistro French

The zinc bar top is probably the most honest thing about St. Jack: it tells you exactly what you're in for before you've ordered a drink. This is a French-leaning bistro on NW 23rd, the kind where steak frites and a martini at the bar feels like a complete plan, but where the kitchen also runs scallop crudo and roast chicken goosed with Espelette pepper. A grand cru Burgundy is available if you're feeling generous with yourself.

  21. G-Love is a Northwest 21st Avenue restaurant that Portland Monthly calls the city's most Californian, which is a dry way of saying the vibe arrived from San Francisco and unpacked. The signature is a half avocado crusted in seeds to look like its own skin, stuffed with tuna poke, caviar optional. It's a sit-down dinner with a little coastal swagger, and it landed on the magazine's iconic dishes list and its 50 best.

  23. Servers in ties and vests refill your water after every sip, and warm focaccia arrives before you've fully settled in. Mucca Osteria is a downtown Italian restaurant operating on the old assumption that hospitality is the whole point, and the kitchen keeps pace: handmade pastas with a silky bite, burrata draped in long-aged prosciutto, scallops over Parmesan fonduta. A room that makes you slow down without making a fuss about it.

  24. A hand-painted plywood sign out front announces a small, no-fuss coffee shop where a few tables, a pour-over, and a record player are the entire amenities package. The beans get roasted across the river and the pastries get baked in-house, so nobody's outsourcing the important parts. It shares its room with Soen, which means a coffee run can quietly turn into onigiri and shaved ice. It's on The Infatuation's list of Portland's best coffee shops.

  25. Deadstock is a tiny coffee shop tucked into a boutique hotel lobby, where vintage Nikes sit on shelves like museum pieces and the latte art sometimes wears little high-tops. The drinks have names like LeBronald Palmer and Zero Chill, and the soundtrack might be Marvin Gaye on vinyl. Sneakerheads, tourists, and neighborhood regulars share the few bar seats, no shoe knowledge required, just a tolerance for being judged by your footwear.

  26. Guilder is a roastery-run coffee shop tucked inside Powell's City of Books, which means your latte comes with a view of other people's reading lists. The drip gets proper respect here, though the seasonal drinks, like a cardamom rose cold brew under floral foam, are the ones to ask about. There's toast and even cocktails, and the clientele is mostly people holding one book and eyeing three more.

  27. A Colombian family operation with a five-acre farm at its roots, Matta lands in Portland's Northwest District as a coffee shop that keeps one foot planted in Bogotá. Espresso drinks share the menu with cocktails and arepas, which is a tidy way to cover breakfast through happy hour. Warm woods and serious plant energy make it the kind of spot where laptops outnumber newspapers, which tells you all you need to know about the afternoon crowd.

  28. The chile oil wontons alone have pulled people across town to this downtown Sichuan restaurant, a sister to Sichuan City out in Happy Valley. The menu runs the full range of textures the cuisine is known for: crispy, tangy, soupy, and that particular mouth-numbing heat that makes you pause mid-bite. Order generously and expect your lips to tingle for a while afterward.

  29. Rank 26. Spella Caffè

    Italian Coffee Shop

Spella is a tiny downtown espresso bar built the Italian way: a marble counter, a narrow ledge to lean on, and no chairs, so nobody is writing a novel here. The menu sticks to the classics, macchiatos and lattes and espresso with a pleasant bitter edge, all of it ordered, drunk, and finished in about the time it takes to check your phone. It's a coffee break in the original sense, minus the laptop. The Infatuation put it on its list of Portland's coffee shops.

  30. Rank 26. Super Joy Coffee Lab

    Chinese Coffee Shop

A downtown coffee shop and roastery that sources beans from Yunnan, China, then puts Chinese flavors in the cup, like an osmanthus latte or a Sichuan pepper mocha that tingles on the way down. The seasonal rose honey pistachio latte has its own devoted following. There are only a few tables and a wall of beans and brewing gear, so you'll mostly be ordering and leaving, or guarding a seat like it's the last lifeboat.

  33. Masu is an omakase sushi counter that sits at the quiet end of the sushi spectrum, where nobody has ever draped a roll in roe or a squiggle of spicy mayo. The dozen or so courses are mostly about the fish itself, cut with the care of someone sizing a diamond, with the occasional hit of yuzu or grapefruit kosho. It's a sit-down, plan-your-evening, reservation-minded sort of dinner, and Eater has it on its best Portland list.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
