The Best Places to Eat and Stay in Niagara & around

  1. Rank 1. Edulis

    Spanish Mediterranean

The menu isn't printed, because by the time you sit down it's already changed. Edulis is a tiny tasting-menu restaurant behind a candy-striped awning on Niagara Street, run by a husband-and-wife team whose culinary frame of reference is the old Michelin-starred dining rooms of Spain and France, framed posters of which line the walls. Phones away, table yours for the night. It holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best.

  2. Rank 1. Linny’s

    Steakhouse

Steaks seared under an overfired broiler, then brushed with pastrami tallow butter: that's the move at Linny's, David Schwartz's fine-dining Jewish American steakhouse on Ossington. The mid-century dining room runs to white linen, golden light, and banquettes comfortable enough to make you order another round. The bar's eight seats have their own scene, with cocktails that fold deli ingredients into the classics in ways that are more clever than they sound.

  3. Follow the smell of barbecue down an alley stacked with firewood and you'll find the front door. Inside, Matty Matheson's steakhouse is all maple slats, a domed ceiling, and salmon-pink booths, which sounds like a lot until you're sitting in it. The menu moves from Sicilian crudo and tartares through big dry-aged cuts cooked on the grill, with vegetable sides that quietly refuse to be an afterthought. Krug by the glass, if you're in the mood.

  4. You walk through a tiny coffee shop at the front, keep going, and eventually the dining room appears around a small kitchen fitted with binchotan charcoal grills. It's a Thai restaurant on Ossington, narrow and sunlit, with a Michelin Bib Gourmand to its name. The menu is tight and considered, running from sticky rice spring rolls through green curry with fish and red curry with duck, all built around fresh herbs and chilis that mean business.

  5. Rank 5. Bar Banane

    Cocktail Bar

The banana cake with salted caramel ice cream lands on your table like the place knows it's having the last word. Bar Banane on Ossington is a cocktail bar that shades into a full dinner, with a raw bar, wagyu, and enough truffle and foie gras to make the room feel deliberate about its own excess. Rich colors, loud music, and a crowd dressed like they know someone on set keep the energy high all night.

  6. Rank 5. Gia

    Plant-forward Italian

A narrow Trinity Bellwoods room with herringbone floors and exposed white brick, Gia is a plant-forward Italian restaurant where the house-made pasta, not the absence of meat, is the point. The mushroom agnolotti in butter and Parmigiano is the kind of dish that makes you forget you were tracking anything. Walk-ins can grab a seat at the walnut bar when reservations run out, which they tend to.

  7. Globe lighting, forest green cushions, and gold-trim tables give this wine bar on Queen West a mid-century modern ease that makes an evening here feel deliberately unhurried. The menu has no particular allegiance to any cuisine, which turns out to be a feature: it exists to pace the wine list, not compete with it. A retail shop sits next door for when the bottle you're on becomes a problem you need to solve immediately.

  9. Rank 5. Pho Tien Thanh

    Vietnamese

The line forms before the door opens, which tells you most of what you need to know about this cash-only-on-weekends pho shop just off Queen Street. Big steaming bowls arrive fast and stay steaming, the rare beef version drawing regulars back in a way that menus with fifty options rarely manage. It's a no-frills room where the broth does the decorating. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

  10. Rank 5. Union

    French

Horseshoe bar at the entrance, rustic brick dining room in the back, and a chef who once worked a farm and still acts like it. Union is a French bistro on a stretch of Ossington shared with butchers and antique shops, and the menu moves with the seasons and local suppliers. The same care goes into an omelette as into steak frites, and if the floor gets busy, the chef may well deliver your plate himself.

  15. Rank 15. La Cubana

    Comfort Food Cuban

Pastel walls and squeaky vinyl banquettes set the tone at this retro Cuban diner on Ossington, where everything from the bread to the desserts comes out of the kitchen from scratch. The barbecue beef short ribs get a long braise and a guava glaze, and the Cubano runs on slow-roasted pork and house-made baguette. The kind of comfort food that doesn't apologize for being exactly what it is.

  16. Leather banquettes, brass fixtures, and a room full of people who clearly planned their outfit around the reservation: La Banane is a French bistro on Ossington that leans into the romance of it all without apology. The kitchen plays with classic French forms, pairing one of the city's more ambitious raw bars with a cooking style that wanders toward yuzu and other detours. The banana cake with salted caramel ice cream has its own cult following.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
