Rank 1. Animae
Pan-Asian
Sky-high ceilings, velvet drapes, and cushy curved booths set the stage for chef Tara Monsod's Filipino- and Asian-inflected steakhouse, a room that takes a night out seriously. The menu moves between wagyu, kinilaw, and kare kare without apology, and the bar is worth a stop on its own. Monsod is a two-time James Beard nominee for Best Chef California, which tracks with how the kitchen handles comfort food this opulent.

Rank 2. Born & Raised
Steakhouse
Tuxedo jackets, Converse sneakers, and a glassed-in meat-cutting room in the back: Born & Raised is an upscale steakhouse dressed in mid-century art deco bones with black-and-white portraits of rap legends lining the walls. Waiters push tableside carts for cocktails and starters, and the open-air rooftop overlooks Little Italy. The steaks are the main event, but the tartare, finished tableside with quail egg and capers, holds its own.

Rank 2. Herb & Wood
California Mediterranean
A converted warehouse in Little Italy with barrel-vaulted ceilings and enough candlelight to make everyone look good, Herb & Wood is a wood-fired New American restaurant where the menu swings from blistered pizzas to venison over buttermilk polenta without losing its footing. The PB&C dessert, chocolate-whiskey cake with peanut butter mousse, has its own following. The Michelin Guide has it on their list, and the room tends to fill early with people who look like they come here often.

Rank 5. Morning Glory
American
A champagne vending machine and a few strategically placed skulls: Morning Glory knows exactly what it is. This Little Italy brunch spot in San Diego earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for soufflé pancakes and a potato-au-gratin slab drowned in sausage gravy that has no business being on a morning menu. Pink marble floors, plush booths, and a line out the door most days, so arrive with a plan or a lot of patience.

Rank 5. The Crack Shack
American
The original Crack Shack is a counter-service fried chicken spot on Kettner, built around an outdoor courtyard with picnic tables, lawn games, and the general mood of a backyard cookout run by someone with a spreadsheet. You order sandwiches, bone-in trays, or a bowl for the one friend who's being good, and everything involves pasture-raised chicken. It's casual, loud, and fine in flip-flops.

Rank 7. Cloak & Petal
Japanese
Two faux cherry trees in bloom flank the bar, old-school rap plays overhead, and graffiti covers the walls: Little Italy's Japanese fine dining scene is apparently not interested in your expectations. Cloak & Petal runs shareable plates, sashimi, and tableside Wagyu alongside creative maki rolls for the kind of crowd that books a month out and still acts surprised when the bill arrives.

Rank 8. Barbusa
Southern Italian
Barbusa is a family-run Southern Italian trattoria in Little Italy, where Sophia Loren and Pavarotti glare down from pop-art portraits like they're checking your reservation. You can drink Aperol-and-ginger-beer Sicilian Mules at the marble bar or settle into the dining room for handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, and crudo. It carries AAA Three Diamonds, so wear something nicer than the shirt you wore to the farmers market.

Rank 8. Juniper & Ivy
Creative American
Redwood beams and curved leather booths fill a converted 1920s warehouse in Little Italy, and the room feels like it's been here forever without trying to look like it has. This is a lively California restaurant where the kitchen folds Latin and Asian flavors into SoCal ingredients without making a fuss about it. The menu reads casually, the execution is anything but, and a Michelin Selected nod backs that up quietly.

Rank 10. Craft & Commerce
Contemporary Gastropub
Taxidermy specimens on loan from the Natural History Museum share wall space with mounted trophies, giving this gastropub the look of a library that got lost on a hunting trip. The Contemporary New American menu leans hearty, with Asian inflections woven through comfort-food staples. The Michelin Guide has noted it, and the crowd skews stylish. Maybe leave your most ethically sensitive friend at the hotel.

Rank 11. Top of the Market
Seafood
The harbor view from the second floor runs from Coronado to Point Loma, which means you're picking at your salmon while watching container ships drift past. This is an upscale seafood restaurant where the fish comes straight off local boats and the room dresses to match. Steaks and roasted chicken hold down the menu for anyone who wandered in under protest. Save room for the citrus olive oil cake.

Sugarfish is the sushi spot where you stop making decisions, since the Trust Me omakase sends out a set procession and the kitchen does the thinking. It's a casual, mid-priced room in Little Italy, with a sushi counter in the back and tables filling the rest. The rice is loosely packed and still warm, and the Los Angeles original's following means a line is a plausible plan.
-
Swells is a sourdough bakery on India Street in Little Italy, where a window into the dough room lets you watch strangers' future toast get kneaded. It's a takeout counter, so no seating and no dress code beyond shoes. The loaves ferment for a day and a half or longer, and the sourdough cookies exist for anyone who finds bread too responsible. They still work the farmers markets where this all began.

Rank 20. Ironside
Seafood
Ironside is a nautical-kitsch seafood restaurant on India Street, with portholes on the walls, anchor hooks for your jacket, and garage doors that open when San Diego's weather does its one trick. The raw bar is the draw, including a platter built for eight to ten people that the menu calls something unprintable here. Weekday happy hour puts oysters at a dollar apiece, which makes 3 p.m. a surprisingly full house.

A tree grows through the middle of the second-floor patio, which tells you something about the vibe here. Kettner Exchange is a bi-level progressive American restaurant in Little Italy where Asian techniques quietly run the kitchen, and the rooftop draws a crowd that came to be seen but stays for the food. Downstairs buzzes; upstairs breathes. The menu moves between crispy rice and dumplings with enough conviction that you forget this place doubles as a nightlife destination.

Rank 27. Bencotto
Lombard
Bencotto is a sit-down Italian restaurant in Little Italy, run by a Milanese kitchen with no interest in reinventing lasagna. The showpiece is pasta tossed inside a giant wheel of Parmesan, which is exactly as theatrical as it sounds. Expect housemade noodles, ossobuco, and a pink pancetta sauce, plus a weekday happy hour where the Aperol spritzes are cheap enough to make the early start feel like good judgment.

Rank 27. Civico 1845
Calabrian
Civico 1845 is a small Little Italy trattoria that does Calabrian cooking, with all the pasta made in-house. It has been said to be the first Italian restaurant in the country with a fully vegan menu, which sits alongside plenty of meat, so the table that can't agree on dinner finally has a place to go. The room is homey and the service is warm, at a price that suits a casual dinner out.

Rank 27. Crudo Ceviche and Oyster Bar
Baja Oyster Bar
Crudo is a Baja-leaning seafood spot on India Street where the counter is laid out like a sushi bar, except the fish is wearing lime instead of soy. Order a tower of oysters and clams, then work through the aguachiles and tostadas, or sit on the roomy patio and let the tacos arrive in their own time. Finish with guava cheesecake and a carajillo, which counts as dessert and a second wind.

Rank 27. Filippi’s Pizza Grotto
Italian
You walk through a working Italian grocery to reach the dining room, which is the first sign this isn't a place with a lot of interest in minimalism. Red-and-white checkered tablecloths, Chianti bottles overhead, and long family-style tables built for birthdays and rehearsal dinners. It's a red-sauce pizza and pasta joint with a cheap check, and the antipasto salad and garlic bread arrive like they were never optional.

Rank 27. Landini’s Pizzeria
New York-style Pizzeria
This is a family-run New York-style pizzeria on India Street, selling slices and whole pies at the kind of prices that won't require a conversation with your accountant. Little Italy mostly closes up early, and this is one of the few spots still serving on weekend nights, which makes it popular with people who skipped dinner or want a second one. Wings, salads, and Italian-meat paninis sit alongside a pie named after the Sopranos, because of course.

Rank 27. Mona Lisa Italian Foods
Italian-American Deli
Mona Lisa is an old-school Italian deli and red-sauce restaurant on India Street, run by the family's third generation and still stocked like somebody's nonna is checking the shelves. The market side carries packaged goods and wine, and the counter builds the kind of sub that needs two hands and a napkin strategy. Next door, lasagna and pasta come in half portions, which feels like the restaurant admitting you also have a day to finish.

Nolita Hall is a big, loud Italian American restaurant and bar at the quiet north end of Little Italy, away from the strip. It runs on a wood-fired oven, a horseshoe bar, communal tables, and projector screens for the game, with a fireplace lounge in between, so every mood in your group has a place to sit. Midweek there's a Girl Dinner deal with vodka pasta and an espresso martini.
The awards
-
Rank 27. Taco Centro
Sonoran
Taco Centro is a casual Little Italy taquería where birria turns up on tacos, on pizza, and in ramen, which is a lot of jobs for one braise. The menu runs thirteen tacos deep, with a Sonoran one on a freshly formed flour tortilla that gets most of the attention. Churros con tres leches close things out, and the drinks lean micheladas, palomas, and local beer on tap. Order at the counter, wear whatever you walked in wearing.
The awards
-
Rank 27. Vino Carta
Wine Bar
Vino Carta is a wine bar that doubles as a bottle shop at the north end of Little Italy, so you can drink a glass here or walk out with something for later. The shelves run to hundreds of bottles, heavy on natural, orange, and sparkling from small family producers. There's a monthly wine club, plus food pop-ups and the occasional DJ night, which is a lot of ambition for something that started as a place to buy wine.
