    The rooms run crisp and modernist, and the suites get bold color and genuinely strange contemporary art. This Andaz sits not on the water but in the Gaslamp Quarter, which puts the city's nightlife at the door rather than the horizon. It used to operate under a different name with a racier reputation, and something of that energy lingers in how the hotel carries itself. Selected by the Michelin Guide.
