    The old Hotel St. James sign still crowns the roofline, and the marble staircase and vintage elevators inside make it clear the building has been around forever. This 122-room boutique hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter keeps the Victorian bones while layering on the Palisociety signature look: rich colors, eclectic furnishings, and enough of a French accent that you half-expect a beret somewhere.
