Anouska Hempel opened this boutique hotel in South Kensington before "boutique hotel" was even a phrase, and the design world has been trying to catch up ever since. Rooms are individually themed, from British Raj to black-lacquered Oriental, packed with Chinese, Japanese, and Indian antiques, and nothing is half-measures. The beds are canopied and sumptuous, the marble baths generous. Pack your tolerance for maximalism, or ask nicely for the white Egyptian suite.
