A 16th-century former military barracks in Croix-Rousse, Lyon's hilly, artsy quarter, now does boutique hotel duty under Accor's Handwritten Collection. The 35 rooms tuck modern comforts beneath old timber beams, and a rooftop terrace bar looks out over Lyon's rooftops with the Rhône below. The historical center is a short walk across the river, which is either a selling point or a relief depending on how late you stay at that bar.
