La Polar
Jaliscan Mexican
White tiles, cold tap beer, and one thing on the menu: birria, the goat stew from Jalisco that La Polar has been making forever. This old-school restaurant in San Rafael keeps it simple and loud, with dueling mariachi bands and, apparently, a talking parrot. Fold the tender meat into warm tortillas, chase each bite with a spoonful of consommé, and let the afternoon dissolve. Thursday or Friday, late afternoon, is when the locals arrive to do exactly that.

“Open since 1934, this white-tiled, multi-story restaurant serves just one dish—birria, a goat (sometimes beef or mutton) stew from Jalisco.”
