Okuniya Mambei
Japanese
Earthenware pots and bold calligraphy on the walls set the tone at this Kyoto eel specialist, where the menu is exactly one thing: kabayaki on rice. The eel is grilled fat-on and served over rice cooked to order in a clay pot, and the leftover rice gets a second act, topped with eel tsukudani and flooded with hojicha. A third-generation river-fish lineage, distilled down to a single dish done with quiet conviction.
