Two chefs, twelve seats, and a nondescript door in a West Oakland industrial block that gives nothing away. Sun Moon Studio is a tasting menu restaurant run entirely by Sarah Cooper and Alan Hsu, no brigade, just the two of them, and the Michelin star on the wall suggests that arrangement works out fine. The menu tracks California seasons closely, and Cooper's baked goods, including savory egg tarts and steamed brioche buns, earn particular attention. Reservations are a project.
