The 13 Best Places to Drink and Stay in Quebec City

Sections

Tap to add or drop a section. At least one stays on.

The best places to drink and stay in Quebec City, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, the Forbes Travel Guide, and Canada's 100 Best have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Auberge Saint-Antoine Relais & Châteaux comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Québec.

More Less

1608 and jjacques hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Spirited Awards next.

  1. Artifacts from the site's past life as a cannon battery and maritime warehouse sit alongside guest room furniture, and the reception desk is built from oak planks two centuries old. This boutique hotel in Old Québec's lower port earns its Michelin 2 Keys with rooms that feel quietly contemporary, river views from nearly every window, and heated bathroom floors that make a lot of sense come January.

  2. Rank 2. 1608

    Cocktail Bar

The circular brass bar in the Château Frontenac's turret room looks out over the St. Lawrence, and local lore has Churchill plotting Allied strategy in this same spot, Scotch and cigar in hand. The cocktail bar has moved on: seasonal drinks draw from Canadian literature and local ingredients like maple gum and verjus from Île d'Orléans. The whisky list alone has grown considerably since Churchill's Johnnie Walker days.

  3. Rank 3. jjacques

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail menu built around the golden age of travel sets the tone at this small, intimate bar tucked down a quiet Saint-Roch side street. The drinks lean theatrical, the food leans oceanic, and the whole operation treats oyster shots and caviar as completely normal bar snacks, which they are here. Weekends tip festive; the room is elegant enough that nobody feels overdressed for ordering well.

  4. If you've seen a single photo of Québec City, you've already seen this hotel looming over it, green copper roof and orange brick against the St. Lawrence. The Château Frontenac is a sprawling, century-old castle of a property, six wings and around six hundred rooms ranging from cozy old-world to the more indulgent Fairmont Gold floors. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. Bring your appetite for ornate antiques and printed fabrics.

  5. A former bank building on a quiet street in Old Québec's 17th-century core, Hotel 71 is a 60-room boutique hotel where the vaulted bones of the place set the stage but don't run the show. The interiors go modern against the historic backdrop, and the penthouse comes with its own private roof terrace. Downstairs there's an espresso lounge, an automated wine bar, and an upscale Italian restaurant with a grappa list longer than most people's attention spans.

  6. Beds raised off the floor, desks that slide into the wall, glassed-in bathrooms, and a courtyard strung with hammocks and lit by firepits: a wallet-friendly hotel on a narrow street just below the old city walls. Rooms are compact but thought out, and the breakfast room tends to hold guests longer than planned. Old Quebec and the St. Lawrence are a short walk away, so you spend your money on the city, not the room.

  7. The bones of a 1912 fish and fruit warehouse are still visible in the dark wood paneling and bones of this Old Port boutique hotel, softened now by deep armchairs, goose-down duvets, and bedside tables that swing out from the wall. Top-floor rooms with St. Lawrence views make a persuasive case for never leaving. No restaurant on site, but the concierge has opinions, and the neighborhood backs them up.

  9. Nine rooms in a building that's been around forever, perched above the St. Lawrence in Old Quebec. The Hôtel Cap Diamant is a quiet boutique hotel where tall windows look out over either Cap Diamant or the old town rooftops, and high ceilings keep things from feeling precious despite all the custom furniture. Breakfast doubles as an excuse to stay at the table. Château Frontenac is a short walk away, which you'll appreciate and then ignore.

  10. A handful of Augustine Sisters still live here, which makes checking into this Old Québec wellness hotel feel like something other than a normal Tuesday. The 17th-century monastery spent nearly four centuries as a convent before becoming a hotel; the former nuns' quarters now hold a mix of period and contemporary rooms, with meditation, holistic treatments, and archives the UNESCO crowd takes seriously.

  11. Gold tile and velvet in every direction signal you're not at a chain. Hôtel Maurice is a boutique hotel on Grande-Allée inside a former political club, and the Art Deco bones are played straight, marble, iridescent showers, bold color blocking, and minibars stocked as if someone expected guests to pregame. On weekends, DJs and a cigar lounge upstairs make the building feel closer to a club than a hotel, which, historically, isn't far off.

  12. The garden terrace is what people come for: a sprawling, vine-tangled outdoor spot on Rue Saint-Jean that fills up fast once temperatures climb. When they drop, a demountable wooden lattice structure folds over the space so the drinking continues at -25°C, which feels appropriately committed for Quebec City. Inside, the heritage building keeps things rustic and comfortably worn-in, a neighborhood bar that never feels like it's trying.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
