The best hotels in Telluride, according to the experts: the Forbes Travel Guide, the Michelin Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Madeline Hotel & Residences comes out on top.

More Less

Inn at Lost Creek and Lumière by Dunton hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Forbes Travel Guide next.

  1. Ski valet at the base of the lift sets the tone at this Auberge Collection hotel in Telluride's Mountain Village. The renovated 83-room property looks like a modern Swiss chateau, with fireplaces, wood beams, and colorful art keeping it from tipping into total ski-lodge cliche. Suites have kitchenettes and balconies over the slopes. The outdoor pool sits ringed by mountains, and the Timber Room's double-sided fireplace does its job extremely well. Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key.

  2. Perched at the top of one lift and the bottom of another, this 32-room boutique ski lodge in Telluride's Mountain Village is about as well-positioned as a hotel can get without actually being on the mountain (it is, essentially, on the mountain). The free gondola to town glides past the front, slopeside rooms catch the snowcats at night, and the bar deck doubles as prime viewing for summer concerts. Selected by both Michelin and Forbes.

  4. Five bedrooms tucked into a Telluride townhouse, decorated in a style that tips its hat to the town's Tyrolean roots rather than the usual antler-and-plaid. This is a boutique guesthouse, meaning a party of ten can take the whole place, and given how far in advance it tends to fill, that's worth knowing early. It sits in the same family as Dunton Hot Springs and Dunton River Camp, which have made a name for outdoor luxury that skips the Rocky Mountain clichés.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
