The best resorts in Norway, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Manshausen comes out on top.

The Well and Lily Country Club hold the next two places.

A cluster of larchwood-and-glass sea cabins perched at the water's edge of a Norwegian archipelago island, this remote hotel earns its Michelin Key. The older main house has been around forever, but the cabins are the reason people make the considerable effort to get here: floor-to-ceiling windows, mid-century furnishings, and views that drop straight into the sea. The Nordic outdoors fills the rest of your day, season permitting.

Phones are banned and the saunas run on a natural nudity policy, so pack accordingly. The Well is a sprawling Nordic spa resort just outside Oslo, built around thermal pools, a Japanese bathhouse, a Turkish hammam, and the kind of enforced stillness that makes even skeptics go quiet. Rooms are spare Scandinavian wood-and-linen, with forest views and no screens anywhere. The spa runs nearly around the clock, so the rooms are mostly for sleeping.

Why #2, not #3
Both places show 70. This one's exact Score is 70.0 and the next is 69.6, so it ranks first. We round what you see, but we rank on the exact number.
- #2 The Well (this place) 70.0
- #3 Lily Country Club 69.6

Guided alpaca treks across the Norwegian countryside set the tone for what this resort, half an hour from Oslo, is actually about. Golf is on offer via a neighboring club, but nearly 500 rooms, a spa, a French and Italian-leaning brasserie, and a cocktail bar suggest the fairways are more of an option than a purpose. Rooms are warm and contemporary, luxurious without any of the flash Norwegians tend to regard as embarrassing.

Converted fisherman's cottages right on the water in Ballstad, a working village midway through the Lofoten archipelago. Hattvika Lodge arranges everything from aurora chases in winter to midnight sun kayaking in summer, working directly with local guides and fishers, so guests spend less time planning and more time outside. The jagged peaks rising behind the harbor make a strong argument for the hillside cabins.

A Tie
Two places have the exact same Score, so they share #4. We don't pick a winner we can't back up.
- #4 Hattvika Lodge (this place) 66.605
- #4 Nusfjord Village & Resort 66.605

Red stilted "rorbuer" still line the harbor at Nusfjord, a fishing village on the southern Lofoten coast where locals live alongside guests in cabins that once sheltered cod fishermen. The resort converts many into lodgings with original timbers and quiet contemporary touches, while a handful remain unmodified since the 1890s, running water included in what they've left out. It's as close as you'll get to sleeping inside a working piece of Norwegian coastal history.
