  7. An old red-brick power plant on the Västerås lakeside has been stretched into an 18-story, 227-room luxury hotel, and the interiors lean hard into what the team calls "industrial-romantic." There's an upscale steakhouse, a rooftop bar, a lounge with an indoor pool heated by one of the original turbines, and an eight-floor indoor water park with waterslides, which is not a sentence you often write about a design hotel.

  8. A brick in the spa wall still carries a woman's footprint from when it was laid centuries ago, which sets the tone for this waterfront hotel in Gamla Stan. Rooms vary between vaulted medieval ceilings and wide views over the water to the old sailing ship Chapman. The Tjärn spa is built into Stockholm's original defensive wall. The Royal Palace and the old town's narrow lanes are steps away.

  10. A lighting architect named Kai Piippo has quietly stolen the show from everyone else at this 169-room hotel a short walk from Stockholm's central station. The 1960s office-block exterior requires a leap of faith, but the inside is all Scandinavian minimalism, run through with shifting light installations. Mood rooms project moving patterns on the walls and cycle the headboard through a spectrum of wintry tones, which is either soothing or a lot, depending on your evening.

  12. A waterfront boutique hotel where the rooms get warmer as the floors climb, dressed in figured wood, faux fur, and velour. Family-owned and set along the Göta river, it runs a rooftop Skybar on the 12th floor, a ground-floor restaurant, a lobby bar, and a spa that punches well above the hotel's size. The Dux beds and Rituals toiletries suggest the team has thought carefully about what you actually touch.

  13. The Bay Bay Pool Club spans 1,750 square meters of sunbeds, firepits, and bass you can feel through the tiles, which sets the tone for this country club resort tucked into Sweden's lake country just outside Gothenburg. The pitch is sociable weekends outdoors, lakeside rides, lobby bar games, and Spanish bites in the sun. It's a place people arrive to unwind and somehow end up with a story about it.

  14. A hotel on Djurgården, the park island where ABBA The Museum is practically a neighbor, Backstage is entirely devoted to theater and the creative arts, which means rooms that lean into drama rather than away from it. Think plush and slightly diva-adjacent. Next door is Konsthallen, a combined shop, bakery, and restaurant running all three meals. The staff apparently track what's actually happening around town, which is more than most hotels manage.

  15. A former sailor's lodging in Umeå, Stora Hotellet leans into its seafaring past with rooms sorted into themes like "adventure," "yearning," and "mystique," which either sounds like a boutique hotel or a personality quiz. The place has been around forever and the heritage feels lived-in rather than museum-ish, with considerably more comfort than any nineteenth-century mariner enjoyed. The in-house restaurant runs from breakfast through late-night drinks, keeping you anchored well past dinner.

  16. A ring of timber suspended over a frozen river in a village most maps don't bother with, Arctic Bath is a design hotel and spa in Swedish Lapland where the plunge pool in the central courtyard is kept, deliberately, at ice-cold. Cabins sit among the pines or out on the ice itself. The days go to dog sledding and snowshoeing, the evenings to sauna ritual and long dinners built on local game. It holds a Michelin Key.

  17. Eight treehouses, each designed by a different Swedish architecture firm, perched in the pines just south of the Arctic Circle. The Mirrorcube disappears into the forest; the UFO looks like a prop from a 1970s Scandinavian sci-fi film. A restaurant serves locally inspired food, and there's a sauna and riverside hot tub, but services are otherwise kept intentionally spare. The point, clearly, is the trees.

  18. Peter Bohlin, the architect behind a string of Apple stores, turns out to have a convincing rustic side. This five-star ski resort in Åre sits at the base of Mount Åreskutan, all soaring timber forms, rough-hewn stone, and classic furs where you might have expected glass and steel. Heated bathroom floors, kitchenettes, a spa, and a dedicated gondola for guests round out the picture. There's fine dining, a lounge bar, and a slopeside outpost for when you can't be bothered to ski all the way back.

  19. Rooms built from ice cut out of the Torne River, sleeping around four degrees below zero, and yet somehow the place is always booked. This Lapland hotel runs year-round: winter brings seasonal ice rooms and artist-carved Art Suites, while the solar-powered Icehotel 365 keeps permanent ice suites cold through summer. Warm chalets are available for guests who prefer a bed that won't slowly melt, along with three restaurants drawing on the traditional flavors of Jukkasjärvi.

  20. A boutique eco-hotel two hundred meters from the Baltic on the island of Öland, StrandNara keeps things crisp and Scandinavian without going cold. The rooms run toward a disciplined palette, and breakfast comes with the stay. Dinner is a three-course modern Nordic affair worth staying in for. Beijershamn nature reserve is a short drive when you do venture out, and the beach is essentially at the door.

  21. A Newport, Rhode Island fantasy transplanted to a Swedish island suburb, Hotel J sits on the water at Nacka Strand with maritime paneling, nautical colors, and the kind of breezy Americana that shouldn't work this far north and somehow does. The boat from Slussen gets you here in fifteen minutes, which is arguably the correct way to arrive at a seaside boutique hotel. The restaurant draws day-trippers as readily as guests, and the seasonal brunch has its devotees.

  22. Rank 192. Bar Afterglow

    Cocktail Bar

The sign in the window says "Cancel your plans," which turns out to be less a warning than a preview. This compact cocktail bar in Södermalm's quieter eastern end is the kind of place where good intentions dissolve around the second round. The bartender's Tomato Coffee, a smoky, somehow-balanced thing that sounds like a mistake, has become a calling card. Carbonated, clarified riffs on classics round out a list that rewards the curious.

  23. Rank 192. Ciccio's

    Italian Cocktail Bar

The bar runs the length of the room, and the dining room noise behind it is part of the deal. Tucked inside an Italian restaurant on Östermalm and nodding to New York's Little Italy, this aperitivo bar lines the walls with old black-and-white photographs and fills the stools with people who came in for one drink and stayed for three. The bartenders dress the part and pour accordingly.

  24. Rank 192. Gaji

    Korean Cocktail Bar

Bare pine, grey banquettes, and thin crystal glassware are about all Gaji offers by way of decoration, which leaves the cocktails nowhere to hide. It's a Korean-Swedish cocktail bar, a combination that sounds like a creative writing prompt but makes a certain sense in Malmö, one of Europe's more genuinely mixed cities. The bar is a sibling to the Namu restaurant next door, and the same cross-cultural logic runs through both.

  25. A 19th-century castle built for a confectioner, now a hotel with two speeds: the historic main house, all period architecture and strait views, and the Sugar Club annex, where poolside suites, DJ sets, and martinis under parasols attract guests who packed lighter. Tennis courts, a spa, and oyster hours on striped sunbeds fill the gaps between. The Öresund Strait sits outside the window, doing its quiet, photogenic thing regardless of which wing you're in.

  26. A 17th-century lakeside manor half an hour from Stockholm, Görvälns Slott is a luxury boutique hotel that commits fully to ornamentation without tipping into fussiness. Heated bathroom tiles, Mille Notti beds, and bath products from Swedish Lapland fill rooms done in soft, calming palettes. The restaurant runs an organic, zero-waste kitchen leaning on foraged and local Swedish ingredients. One rule: guests must be 16 or older, which tells you exactly what they're going for.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
