The best resorts in Hakone, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. THE HIRAMATSU HOTELS & RESORTS SENGOKUHARA comes out on top.

Hakone Kowakien Tenyu and Hakone Retreat Villa 1/f hold the next two places.

A French auberge in Hakone is an odd choice until you're soaking in the private onsen that comes with every room. This small resort takes twenty Western-style rooms and pairs them with European cooking built from local ingredients, some looking out over the caldera, others into dense cedar green. It holds a Michelin Key, and the whole thing feels like someone genuinely couldn't choose between Burgundy and the hot springs, then refused to.

Every room at this large resort in the hills above Hakone comes with its own private open-air onsen, which makes the public baths, already spectacular, feel almost redundant. Too big to call itself a ryokan but borrowing everything appealing about one: forest trails, mountain seclusion, seasonal Japanese cuisine, and the sound of waterfalls doing most of the therapeutic work before any massage is booked.

Three places have the exact same Score, so they share #2. We don't pick a winner we can't back up.

Private wood-timbered bungalows tucked into the Hakone forest, each one stocked with a kitchenette, a fireplace, and its own mineral hot spring, so you never have to negotiate with another guest over the onsen schedule. This resort is designed for switching off, and the house supplies coloring books and board games to prove it means this literally. Hiking and cycling trails are nearby when the fireplace loses its argument.

An international luxury resort tucked into Gora, a hot spring town in the forested hills near Mount Fuji, the Hyatt Regency Hakone sits where ryokans typically rule, and holds its own with Western rooms, tatami suites, mountain balconies, and jetted tubs. The onsen baths are the draw, fed by actual hot springs, and the ancient Hakone-Jinja shrine is a short wander away. Commit to the property: this is proper resort territory, not a hotel with a good neighborhood.
