The best wine bars in London, according to the experts: National Restaurant Awards, Michelin Guide, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Planque comes out on top.

More Less

Labombe by Trivet and Sune hold the next two places. Michelin Guide and The Infatuation show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. Rank 1. Planque

    Modern British Wine Bar

Two former railway arches in Haggerston have been turned into a wine-focused restaurant with cobalt blue walls, a communal table at its center, and a surprising amount of natural light for a space that technically lives underground. Membership gets you wine storage and priority reservations, but the 60-cover room is open to everyone. The modern British menu is short and deceptively simple, with small-producer, low-intervention bottles doing a lot of the talking.

  2. The separate entrance off Old Park Lane is a small but telling detail: this Michelin-starred wine bar and restaurant from the Trivet team is doing its own thing inside the COMO Metropolitan. The menu roams freely, from snacks to pâté en croûte to dishes pulled off the fire, without much interest in being categorized. The global wine list is long and the staff actually know it, which in Mayfair counts as a personality.

  3. Rank 3. Sune

    Wine Bar

Sune (rhymes with "sooner," which is worth knowing before you ask) feels like a wine bar that quietly decided it wanted to be a neighborhood restaurant when it grew up. Around 14 sharing plates rotate on a fluid menu, built on simple pairings that don't crowd each other out. The room is small, the service is warm, and the kitchen in Hackney is the kind that makes restraint look like a gift.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
