The best barbecue in London, according to the experts: World's 101 Best, Michelin Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Ibai comes out on top.

More Less

Smokestak and Mangal 2 hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

  1. Rank 1. Ibai

    Basque Barbecue

A converted warehouse in Farringdon where the open grill is the architecture, not the decor. Ibai is a Basque grill restaurant built around Galician Blond beef from mature dairy cows, dry aged and cooked over a multi-tier charcoal fire at different heights depending on the cut. The sourcing decisions happen long before the kitchen does. It lands at number seven on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, and the wine list leans hard into Spain.

  2. The brisket goes into the smoker overnight and comes out glazed, melting, and almost insultingly good for the price. This Shoreditch barbecue joint keeps things straightforward: expertly handled smoke, wallet-friendly plates, and a room that's genuinely lively without trying too hard. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. Service moves fast and knows the menu cold.

  3. Rank 3. Mangal 2

    Turkish Barbecue

The ocakbasi grill is still the heart of the room, but Mangal 2 has come a long way from its Dalston kebab-house origins. The sons of the founder, one of them fresh from Copenhagen's Noma orbit, took over and quietly rewired the whole operation. It draws the kind of Londoners who track that sort of thing, but the wood smoke and the borek keep it from feeling like a dinner party.

  4. Rank 4. KHAO BIRD

    Northern Thai Barbecue

Northern Thai barbecue is the spine of the menu at this lively Soho restaurant, which built its following through a residency near Borough Market before landing a permanent spot on Brewer Street. The cooking ranges across regions but keeps coming back to smoke and char, with the kind of vibrant, confident flavours that don't ask much of your wallet on the way out. It fills up fast and feels exactly like where Soho is right now.

  5. Rank 5. Garden Bar by Cue Point

    Afghan-Texan Barbecue

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
