The best Turkish food in London, according to the experts: The 50, Michelin Guide, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Mangal 2 comes out on top.

More Less

NORA and yeni hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Eater next.

  1. Rank 1. Mangal 2

    Turkish Barbecue

The ocakbasi grill is still the heart of the room, but Mangal 2 has come a long way from its Dalston kebab-house origins. The sons of the founder, one of them fresh from Copenhagen's Noma orbit, took over and quietly rewired the whole operation. It draws the kind of Londoners who track that sort of thing, but the wood smoke and the borek keep it from feeling like a dinner party.

  2. Rank 2. NORA

    Turkish

The sesame caraway pide arrives before anything else, and that's a good call. This Turkish restaurant sits on the ground floor of a glass-fronted Canary Wharf apartment block, moody enough inside, with tiled tables and a bar counter where a solo lunch fits nicely, and booths roomy enough for a group that has something to celebrate. The baklava, pistachio-topped and properly chewy, is the kind of ending that makes the financial district feel briefly forgivable.

  5. One thing on the menu: tantuni, a street-food wrap from Mersin in southern Turkey that you won't find on many London menus. Beef is boiled, seasoned, and fried in cotton oil, then packed into thin lavash with parsley, tomato, and onion, bent into shape, and handed over. Jonathan Nunn called it the superior late-night snack template, and the West Green Road regulars filing in after dark are not arguing.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
