The Best Places to Eat and Do in Jingumae & around

  1. Rank 1. Den

    Japanese

The omakase opens with a wafer sandwich of foie gras and miso, which sets the tone for what Den is doing: Japanese fine dining that refuses to be solemn about itself. Two Michelin stars and a spot on the World's 50 Best lists, and the room still runs on actual warmth rather than ceremony. The chef's whole project seems to be making sure you leave having had fun, and it works.

  6. A two-Michelin-starred sushi counter in Jingumae where the chef's family once lived, which gives the room a weight that's hard to place. He trained in the old-school tradition and has kept something of the beginner's mindset, the kind of discipline that reads as simplicity until you start paying attention. The fish does the talking, but only because a lot of quiet work happens before the plate arrives.

  7. Rank 7. JULIA

    Japanese

Dinner at this Aoyama restaurant starts downstairs with an aperitif before guests move up to the main dining room, where the kitchen is fully on view. The chef and her sommelier husband run the room together, and the Japanese tasting menu leans hard into vegetables, pickled things, and foraged mountain produce. The converted house keeps the whole thing feeling like someone's very well-fed home, which is perhaps the point.

  11. A U-shaped limestone counter, white lab coats, and bowties might suggest a pharmaceutical trial, but this is a coffee shop where the specialty is flights, one bean expressed as a pour over, espresso, latte, and mocktail in sequence. The spacious warehouse setting is sleek and unhurried, and the staff are warmer than the outfits imply. Evenings bring spiked coffee cocktails if the science-class atmosphere has you feeling experimental.

  12. A casual Southeast Asian restaurant in Shibuya where the menu arrives flagged, literally, with the national colors of each dish's origin country. The kitchen draws on hawker traditions across Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, then quietly swaps in Japanese ingredients. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which is about right for a room that feels less like a restaurant and more like wandering a night market with a very good sense of direction.

  13. Rank 13. Tamawarai

    Japanese Noodle Shop

The chef mills his own buckwheat, some of it grown in his own garden, to coax out an aroma that pre-ground flour can't touch. This quiet soba shop in Jingumae serves coarse-ground seiro with a wild, earthy depth that makes the usual lunch-counter bowl feel like a different food entirely. Evenings shift to a prix fixe format with small courses built around buckwheat in forms well beyond the noodle.

  17. A tonkatsu shop in Jingumae where the chef fries named-breed pork in lard kept at a lower temperature than usual, which gives the crust that rare quality of being crisp without being loud about it. Rice comes out of clay pots and into wooden tubs, a two-step process that keeps it light and a little sweet. The chicken cutlet earns a mention too, which makes sense once you know the chef also runs a yakitori place. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  22. Rank 19. DEN KUSHI FLORI

    Fusion Japanese

A basement fusion restaurant born from a handshake between two of Tokyo's more restless kitchens, Den and Florilège. The name stitches them together with "kushi," the Japanese word for skewer, though nothing here comes on a stick. Expect Japanese-Western cooking that shifts constantly, tempura with sherry, sweetfish in a custard tart, dishes that exist once and never again. The kind of place where the menu is less a document than a mood.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
