The Best Places to Eat and Stay in North Downtown

  1. A Bocci light sculpture of 480 illuminated leaves greets you at the door, which sets the tone for a Forbes Five Star hotel that takes its art program as seriously as its harbor views. Rooms lean Fairmont-traditional with marble bathrooms and Stearns & Foster beds, while the waterfront tower frames Stanley Park and the North Shore mountains in one sweep. Several restaurants and bars on site, including Vancouver's first fully sustainable sushi bar.

  2. The bar at Botanist sits just inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim, intimate and posh enough that dressing up feels like the point. This is fine dining with a serious cocktail program, and the drinks lean into a nature-obsessed identity, including a glass-fronted lab where the team produces things like a martini built with kombu and sea asparagus. North America's 50 Best Bars placed it at number 38. The kitchen behind it runs hyper-local West Coast tasting menus alongside à la carte.

  3. Six seats tucked into the corner of an unrelated restaurant, accessed through a print shop, which tells you everything and nothing about what follows. This is a Michelin-starred omakase counter where the chef trained at a top Tokyo bar, and the room is so spare that the food has nowhere to hide. His wife runs hospitality with the kind of quiet attentiveness that makes a long tasting meal feel effortless rather than ceremonial.

  4. Arthur Erickson's twisting downtown skyscraper is an unlikely host for a hotel that seems determined to keep you out of your room. A lobby pool table, nightclub, high-end Chinese restaurant, and rooftop-adjacent lounge make the public floors feel like the whole point. The 147 rooms vary in shape because the building does too, but all get leather headboards, wood floors, and floor-to-ceiling city views. Forbes Four Star, if you want the shorthand.

  5. Rank 5. Miku

    Japanese

The aburi salmon oshi sushi has inspired fan art, which tells you something about how this fine dining Japanese restaurant on Vancouver Harbour operates. Miku folds French and Italian technique into a Japanese framework and takes sustainability seriously enough to mark Ocean Wise options across the menu. The harbour view is genuinely gorgeous, and the kitchen seems aware that coasting on it would be too easy.

  6. Rank 5. Nightingale

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The Neapolitan-style pizzas come out of a wood-fired oven with properly blistered crusts, which is a fine way to anchor an otherwise wide-ranging menu of shareable rustic plates. This stylish, high-ceilinged downtown restaurant pulls in business lunches by day and groups of friends by night, and the room handles both without breaking a sweat. The Michelin Guide has selected it, and Vancouver Magazine gave it gold for Best Informal Contemporary.

  7. Blinds, curtains, and the fleeting Vancouver sun: all managed from the bedside panel without disturbing your sheets. This contemporary luxury hotel occupies fifteen floors of a mixed-use skyscraper, which means it plugs into the city rather than sealing itself off from it. Rooms run large, suites have balconies over West Georgia, and the bathrooms come with mirror-mounted screens and multi-head showers. A Michelin Key, a spa, and a northern Italian restaurant round things out.

  8. A Coal Harbour boutique hotel in a sleek glass tower, the Loden holds a Michelin Key and earns it partly through geography: this corner of downtown sits like stadium seating for the Burrard Inlet panorama. Rooms run from understated to a suite with a wraparound terrace for serious mountain-gazing, all tied together by mid-century touches, a muted regional palette, and deep soaking tubs that make sense the moment Vancouver's famous drizzle sets in.

  9. Rank 9. Mott 32

  10. The two-sided fireplace in the center of the room does a lot of heavy lifting at this sleek hotel lounge inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim. Pull up a seat at the marble bar or grab one near the stage for nightly live music, and order from a sushi-focused menu that leans on local salmon and steelhead. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and the crowd dressed just well enough to be here tends to linger.

  11. The Vancouver Stock Exchange's 1929 shell now anchors a skyscraper hotel in the financial district, and the Art Deco bones are very much still flexing. EXchange Hotel Vancouver is a full-service luxury stay where the interiors read glamorous without tipping into theatrical, and the rooms work equally well for a romantic weekend or a polished work trip. The Martini Rooms come with in-room self-serve bars, which either sounds like a perk or a liability depending on who's paying.

  15. Rank 14. Carlino

    Friulian

Tucked onto a terrace inside the Shangri-La Hotel, this elegant Northern Italian restaurant draws from the Friuli region, where the cooking carries a Germanic and Slavic undertow you don't expect. Freshly made pastas lead the way, including regional shapes rarely seen on this side of the Atlantic. The menu keeps things seasonal and unfussy, and at dinner you can hand the whole decision over to the kitchen, which suits anyone who finds menus exhausting.

  16. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the inner harbour at this polished downtown steakhouse, where the nautical decor leans into the setting without going full sailor. It draws a spendy waterfront crowd, but the kitchen is doing careful work beneath the glamour: the Louie salad with lump crab is a genuine reason to order it, and the fish and chips comes out lighter than you'd expect. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

  17. Finding the 515 Bar involves navigating through a youth hostel and a sports bar, which is either an adventure or a nuisance depending on how your night is going. Once inside, this cocktail bar settles into a European mood, with an indie retro playlist and cheese and charcuterie from Les Amis du Fromage anchoring the room. The cocktails run strong, the bathroom quest grows more interesting after a few, and a line forms for happy hour on Friday and Saturday.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
