A 17th-century arsenal turned boutique hotel on Lisbon's civic square, where period stone and timber sit alongside very much present-century design. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels. Designer Giano Gonçalves let the landmark's protected bones lead, and the result lands somewhere between historic and uncategorizable. The all-day restaurant Delfina pulls in locals, which is as good a sign as any that the place isn't just coasting on the address.
