The best hotels in Gianyar, according to the experts: the Forbes Travel Guide, the Michelin Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve comes out on top.

More Less

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan and Capella Ubud hold the next two places. The Forbes Travel Guide and the Michelin Guide show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. Perched above the Ayung River with rice terraces dropping away on every side, Mandapa is a Ritz-Carlton Reserve resort outside Ubud that keeps just 35 suites and 25 private pool villas. Each guest gets a personal patih butler, daily yoga and Balinese healing sessions run by local practitioners, and the option to trek the paddies or join a temple blessing. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a spot on the World's 50 Best Hotels list.

  2. Eighteen acres of terraced gardens slope down to the Ayung River, and the resort grows much of what ends up on the plate, eggplant and lemongrass among them. At 60 rooms it runs small for a Four Seasons, so the pools, restaurants, and pair of spas all feel like they belong to you rather than a convention. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a 50 Best Most Admired Hotel Group Award.

  3. Each of the 23 tents at this luxury tented lodge in Ubud's jungle ravine is dressed to a different theme, from baking utensils to film-set props, courtesy of designer Bill Bensley, who clearly considers restraint someone else's problem. It holds a Forbes Four Star rating. The above-ground rainforest pool cuts through the canopy, each tent has its own plunge pool, and the whole thing reads less like a resort than an elaborate, extremely comfortable fever dream.

  4. A natural spring on the property has been considered sacred by locals long before the resort arrived, which sets the tone for everything here. COMO Shambhala is a wellness resort near Ubud where the programming is serious: resident Ayurvedic doctors, tai chi masters, and a nutritional plan tailored to you personally. Twenty-three jungle acres along the Ayung River, and no one is pretending you came just for the pool. Forbes Four Star.

  5. A funicular from the lobby hauls you up through the jungle canopy to one of 40 private villas, each with its own pool hanging over the Ayung River gorge. This Forbes Four Star resort outside Ubud is the kind of place where leaving your villa feels like a personal failing, though the infinity pool that's made a thousand strangers' feeds is a reasonable reason to try. The spa and an on-site restaurant round out the case for never leaving the property at all.

  6. The long, shaded driveway into this Aman resort in Kedewatan does most of the work before you've even checked in, trading Ubud's motorbike chaos for birdsong. Buildings of local teak and mahogany sit under vaulted thatched roofs, modeled on the Balinese village around them, with staff leaving daily offerings at scattered Hindu shrines. It's a luxury resort built around quiet and privacy, which in Bali is its own kind of extravagance.

  7. A 40-villa resort perched on a ridge above the Valley of the Kings, just outside Ubud, where the valley below is dotted with shrines and water temples going back centuries. The setting does a lot of the work before you even unpack. Arrive by road from the airport, or, if you feel the occasion demands it, by helicopter along the Petanu River Gorge, which takes about twelve minutes and requires very little justification.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
