The World's Top 100 Bagel Shops

A short list, fiercely argued: the bagel shops that have made the professional record, ranked by the honors behind them.

  1. Rank 1. Starship Bagel

    NY-Style Bakery

  2. Rank 2. Starship Bagel

    NY-Style Bakery

  3. The smoked fish counter on Orchard Street has been an institution since forever, and Russ & Daughters is the appetizing shop New York trots out whenever it needs to prove a point. White-jacketed servers, a pristine deli case, egg creams, bagels, and Scottish salmon done multiple ways. The Michelin Bib Gourmand nod keeps it honest: the food is the whole point, and the regulars at the counter have known that for years.

  4. Rank 4. Poppy Bagels

    California-style Bakery

A bagel shop in Temescal that quietly reframes the whole New York-versus-everywhere-else argument by not entering it. Poppy turns out the classics, lox, whitefish, schmears of every persuasion, but the open-face seasonal veg sandwich is the point: California produce stacked on a proper bagel, finished with salsa macha for heat. Bon Appétit named it among the very best bagels in the country, New York included.

  5. Rank 4. Starship Bagel

    NY-Style Bakery

  6. Rank 7. Bagelfeld's

    NY-Style Bakery

  7. Rank 7. Bo's Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  8. Rank 7. El Bagel

    Bakery

  9. Bagels hang in metal racks draped with white sheets, a nod to the coin-operated laundry this place used to be. Now it's an all-day pizza and bagel shop on Balboa, mornings given over to coffee from Grand Coffee and a solid bagel lineup that runs from egg to rye, with schmears folded through green onion or spiked with Calabrian chiles. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the top bagels in the Bay Area, and a Top 100 restaurant pick followed.

  10. Rank 7. Utopia Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  11. Rank 20. Call Your Mother

    NY-Style Bakery

  12. Rank 22. Liberty Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  13. Rank 25. Bagel Pub

    NY-Style Bakery

  14. Rank 25. Best Bagel & Coffee

    NY-Style Bakery

Some of the bagels here are so large they've lost their holes entirely, which feels like a metaphor for Midtown but is actually just breakfast. This no-frills bagel shop near Penn Station runs like a commuter train that actually shows up: the line moves, the bagels come out hot, and the chewy, twisty exterior is what you came for. The New York Times named it among the city's best, and the 8 a.m. crowd would agree without looking up.

  15. Rank 25. Schlok's

    Bakery

The salmon here gets cured and smoked in-house, which tells you most of what you need to know about how seriously this bagel shop takes itself. Schlok's sits just off the Panhandle, turning out traditional malty bagels with a thin, crisp crust and a caper schmear that leans hard into brine. Co-founded by a chef with Michelin-starred kitchen time, it punches well above the cream-cheese-from-a-tub competition.

  16. The mission here is explicit: no rainbow bagels, no blueberry bagels, no what Peter Shelsky calls the "shiksa bagel." This Park Slope bagel shop makes small, crust-forward rounds in the New York tradition, though the Sichuan peppercorn bagel, a nod to the long Jewish-Chinese-food alliance, bends the rules just enough. The New York Times named it among the city's best, which is the only endorsement that really matters in this particular argument.

  17. Rank 25. Terrace Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  18. Rank 32. Apollo Bagels

    California-style Bakery

  19. Rank 32. Bergen Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  20. Rank 32. Liberty Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  21. Rank 32. Liberty Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  22. Rank 32. Liberty Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  23. Rank 32. Tal Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  24. Rank 32. Utopia Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  25. Rank 44. Bagel Hole

    NY-Style Bakery

  26. Rank 44. Bagel Joint

    NY-Style Bakery

  27. Rank 44. Bagel Oasis

    NY-Style Bakery

  28. Rank 44. Bagel Pub

    NY-Style Bakery

  29. Rank 44. Bagels & Schmear

    NY-Style Bakery

  30. Rank 44. Baz

    NY-Style Bagel Bakery

  31. Rank 44. Knickerbocker Bagel

    NY-Style Bakery

  32. Rank 44. Wheated

    New Haven-Style Pizza

The New Haven-style pies here are cooked to a serious crunch, with dough pressed thinner than the Connecticut purists would sanction and a tangy, oregano-heavy tomato sauce that makes a decent argument for staying in Brooklyn. Wheated is a Ditmas Park pizzeria with a full bar that also does bagels, so the menu has range. The New York Times put it on their best pizza in New York list, which is the kind of thing that fills a neighborhood spot fast.

  33. Rank 60. Call Your Mother

    Jewish American

  34. Rank 62. Fisher's Deli

    NY-Style American

  35. Rank 63. Mark's Off Madison

    Old-School Bakery

  36. Rank 64. Belle's

    Bakery

  37. Rank 64. Call Your Mother

    Jewish American

  38. Rank 64. Call Your Mother

  43. Rank 64. Courage Bagels

    Montreal-Inspired Bakery

  44. Rank 64. Emerald City Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  45. Rank 64. Emerald City Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  46. Rank 64. Grossman’s Noshery & Bar

    NY-Style American Cocktail Bar

The sourdough starter for the bagels here is fed with imported Brooklyn water, a detail that tells you exactly where this deli-bar's loyalties lie. Grossman's is a relaxed Jewish-style deli and cocktail bar in Santa Rosa, turning out knishes, latkes, and chopped liver in a corner of California that doesn't see nearly enough of them. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best restaurants in Sonoma County and called its bagels the best in the Bay Area.

  47. Rank 89. Boichik Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

The line outside this Berkeley bagel shop has been there since day one and shows no sign of leaving. Boichik turns out chubby, chewy, malty New York-style bagels, kosher and done traditionally: salt bagels heavy with big sea-salt flakes, pumpernickel baked nearly chocolate-dark. The San Francisco Chronicle named them the Bay Area's best. Cream cheese runs from plain whipped to Hatch chile, and the house-made whitefish salad sandwich makes a strong case for staying.

  48. Rank 89. Hella Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

A bagel shop that graduated from popup to a proper Albany storefront, Hella Bagels turns out rounds with the kind of chew that makes you feel like your jaw is doing something worthwhile. The patio, ringed in beige and rust tones that happen to match the bagels, is a nice place to work through a sandwich. The San Francisco Chronicle named them the Bay Area's best.

  49. Rank 89. The Bagel Mill

    NY-Style Bakery

The bagels here start as whole wheat grain, stone-milled on-site before the dough even exists. This Petaluma bagel shop runs a 36-hour process using sourdough starter, so the finished product lands somewhere between New York tradition and Northern California obsession. Toppings skew local and organic, and the menu stretches from classic to pesto and pizza. The San Francisco Chronicle named it the Bay Area's best.

  50. Rank 89. Winston's Cafe & Bakery

    Filipino Cocktail Bar

  51. Rank 94. Bergen Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  52. Rank 94. Bergen Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  53. Rank 94. Tal Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  54. Rank 94. Tal Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  55. Rank 94. Tal Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. Most of it is the record: the scored places within reach, weighed by distance, so more good stuff nearby means a higher score. The rest is how life is in that country: how people there rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are, and what they breathe. If it looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
