Rank 2. Kabawa
Caribbean
Caribbean fine dining finally gets its flowers here, and Paul Carmichael makes sure they're worth it. Kabawa runs a prix-fixe tasting menu that takes the flavors of the diaspora seriously without making you feel like you're in a lecture, just a really good meal. The room is dark and elegant, the crowd is dressed up and leaning in, and the cooking carries real weight. Next door, Bar Kabawa keeps things loose if you just want a drink and a patty.

Rank 2. State Bird Provisions
Californian
Michelin-starred State Bird Provisions runs dim sum-style service with California cooking, meaning carts roll past your table and you grab whatever looks good. It's a genuinely fun way to eat, letting you build a meal out of whims instead of a menu. The room is loud and full of people who planned ahead, because getting a reservation takes real effort. Worth every refresh of the booking page.

Rank 6. Jeune et Jolie
Nouvelle French
A Michelin-starred nouvelle French spot in Carlsbad that genuinely earns it, Jeune et Jolie is the kind of fine dining that doesn't make you feel like you're at a board meeting. The room is all rose tones and good light, full of couples dressed up just enough. The kitchen handles serious ingredients with a light touch, the prix fixe is the move, and the cocktails are good enough to make you stay longer than planned.

Rank 6. Nari
Thai
Nari is a Michelin-starred prix-fixe spot inside Hotel Kabuki where the cooking genuinely earns the dramatic room it's served in. The chef runs contemporary Thai through a California filter, and the results are sharper and more interesting than that sounds. Dishes come family-style, which loosens things up nicely. The curries alone are worth the trip. Expect well-dressed couples and food-curious locals who definitely Googled the menu beforehand.

Rank 6. Angler
Seafood
Angler is a Michelin-starred seafood spot on the Embarcadero where live fire does most of the talking. The open kitchen pulls focus the whole night, and you can taste the smoke in almost everything that comes out of it. It draws the kind of crowd that orders confidently and dresses like they mean it. The wine list is serious, and dessert is genuinely not optional. Budget accordingly, and snag a reservation.

Kaiseki Japanese
Michelin-starred kaiseki at an intimate counter where the chef treats seasonality like a personal obsession, not a marketing angle. Each course highlights a different technique, so dinner feels like a lesson you didn't know you needed. The room is spare and serene, with ikebana and a dry garden keeping things grounded. The dozen or so people lucky enough to get a seat are dressed well and very, very quiet.

Vegetarian
A Bib Gourmand vegetarian burger counter in the East Village where the food is genuinely good, not just good-for-a-veggie-place. The room draws a mix of neighborhood regulars and curious carnivores who all look a little smug once they taste the quinoa-and-chickpea burger that made this spot famous. No reservations, vintage diner feel, and desserts worth saving room for. Come early or expect a wait.

Rank 11. Glai Baan
Thai
The name means "far from home," which is fitting because the food tastes like it was made by someone who actually misses Thailand, not someone who Googled it. This cozy central Phoenix spot does Thai street food and northeastern regional cooking, the kind of thing you'd eat at a Bangkok night market rather than a strip-mall pad thai place. Book ahead, because the room fills fast with people who clearly know something you don't.

Seafood
A Michelin Bib Gourmand raw bar attached to the acclaimed Helen, this airy spot is where downtown Birmingham goes for a long, leisurely lunch over freshly shucked oysters and pristine Gulf seafood. The menu leans seasonal and whole-fish serious, but the vibe is relaxed enough that nobody's keeping score. The seafood charcuterie alone is worth the trip, and you'll want to save room for the coconut cream pie.

Reservations here are tough to score, so show up early and charm your way onto a barstool. Verjus is a French wine bar and bistro tucked near the Transamerica Pyramid, where the crowd leans into natural wine with the conviction of people who've given it real thought. The kitchen keeps things deceptively simple, leaning on great seafood and whatever's in season, and the duck pâté en croûte has become something of a reason to return.

French
A neighborhood bistro in the best sense: the kind of place where the food is clearly French but the ingredients are clearly Californian, and somehow that tension makes everything taste better. The room feels lived-in without being shabby, and the crowd matches, locals who know the menu cold mixing with people who just discovered it. The real closer is that dessert comes from the celebrated patisserie next door, which is genuinely unfair to everywhere else.

Northern Vietnamese
Northern Vietnamese with an upscale edge, Bodega SF sits in the middle of downtown and draws the after-work crowd in from the cold. The wood-heavy room feels genuinely polished without trying too hard, and the menu earns it, running from solid lunch phở to dinner dishes where turmeric cakes arrive topped with caviar. The family behind it has been doing this for years, and it shows in how composed everything feels.

Portuguese Bakery
Holy Nata does one thing: warm Portuguese pasteis de nata, straight out of the oven on a side street downtown. The custard filling is thick enough to make you rethink every other egg tart you've ever had, and the crust shatters exactly the way it should. Go plain, add cinnamon, or show up on a Thursday when Nutella enters the chat. The crowd is mostly people who know, plus a few lucky tourists who stumbled in.

Khao Tiew turned West Portal into a legit Thai destination with a playful, remixed take on familiar dishes, the kind of cooking that feels creative without being annoying about it. The room is decorated with vintage Thai movie posters and draws a neighborhood crowd, families mostly, people who clearly come back often. The kaya toast with pandan custard and ice cream is the kind of dessert that makes you reconsider every decision that led you somewhere else.

An old-school soda fountain that's been around for years in Carroll Gardens, set inside a beautifully restored former pharmacy with all the vintage fixtures still intact. Families, couples, and anyone who just wants a proper sundae fill the booths on weekends.

Dessert
Naming your shop "Best Donuts" is either bold or delusional, and here it turns out to be bold. This South Phoenix counter does old-fashioned donuts the way they were meant to be, light and almost impossibly fluffy inside, with just enough glaze holding the whole thing together. The maple bar and the butterfly, a folded cinnamon roll with vanilla glaze and buttery crumble, are worth the drive too.
-
Rank 89. Creampuff
Bakery
The cocktail bar and restaurant crowd that runs some of Phoenix's cooler nightlife spots turned their attention to daytime sugar, and the result is a doughnut shop worth crossing town for. Sitting in the warehouse district just south of downtown, Creampuff does both classic brioche doughnuts and tall, croissant-style hybrids loaded with frostings and fillings. The coffee's good too, which keeps the morning regulars happily planted.

Bakery
A small-but-serious donut shop tucked into a Scottsdale strip mall that takes its craft way more seriously than the setting suggests. The menu is organized into tiers called Classy, Fancy, and Schmancy, which tells you everything about the vibe. They do yeast donuts, cake donuts, fritters, mochi donuts, and seasonal stuff, so whoever you bring will find something. A family-run donut shop in the West Valley where the classics are done right and nobody's trying to reinvent anything. They also do coffee, smoothies, and ice cream, so the whole family leaves happy and nobody has to compromise on anything.

Rank 89. mochidot
Dessert
Mochi doughnuts are the chewy, bouncy, rice-flour cousins of the regular kind, and MochiDot does them better than the chain spots scattered around the Valley. The bubble-ring shape means you can snap off a ball and try a few flavors without committing, which is honestly how dessert should always work. Flavors rotate with the seasons, but ube and Lotus Biscoff tend to show up reliably. Bring friends, because sharing is basically built into the format.
