The best hotels in Miyakojima, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and The 50 have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Rosewood Miyakojima comes out on top.

More Less

Blue Ocean Hotel & Resort Miyakojima and Jivana Miyakojima ジバナ hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

  1. Fifty-five private villas strung along a crescent of white sand on Miyako-jima's remote northwest coast, each with its own pool and a Ryukyu stone bath. This is Rosewood's first Japanese property, and the design takes its cues from the Ryukyu archipelago: pale woods, soft textiles, salt air, and a silence that feels deliberately engineered. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys. Pack light and plan to do very little, efficiently.

  2. White-walled villa suites with rooftop terraces, private pools, and jacuzzis sit at the edge of Irabu Island, right across the bridge from the main airport. This resort's on-site restaurant sources Miyako wagyu and local reef fish, framing them against the hyper-blue water that locals take as a point of personal pride. Hotel suites look out over the Irabu Bridge; ground-floor terrace rooms face the greenery instead. The Michelin Guide has it among its Selected Hotels.

  3. Seven all-suite villas on the southern coast of Irabu Island, close enough to Taiwan that the palms and turquoise water start to feel less like Japan and more like somewhere further adrift. Each villa faces south with a heated private pool, and if you want breakfast delivered on floating platters, that's a sentence you can now say out loud. Some villas add private saunas or a barbecue setup.

  4. Perched on Irabu Island, halfway between Okinawa and Taiwan, this seaside resort sits somewhere the phrase "getting away from it all" stops feeling like a cliché. Most of the 58 rooms and suites face the ocean, and even the garden-facing ones lean into a spare, restful minimalism. The spa draws on local Okinawan ingredients, and the French restaurant does the same. Proof that the Miyako Islands reward the extra effort to reach them.

  5. Five villas on the far southeastern tip of Miyako Island, itself already a detour from Okinawa, which is itself a detour from anywhere. Each villa at this small, private resort reads like a meditation on stone and tile, softened by cool textiles and just enough tropical green, with its own terrace and infinity pool aimed squarely at the Philippine Sea. After dark, the stars take over completely.

  6. Perched on stilts above Miyako Island's southern coast, this boutique resort looks like a stack of futuristic glass boxes from the outside and barely more than that inside, which is the point. Slate floors, white linens, and sliding doors onto private patios keep nothing between you and the water. Breakfast is a carefully arranged spread of organic island produce. Imugya Marine Garden, a snorkeler's haunt, is directly across the street.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
