The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Montrose

  1. Rank 1. March

    Mediterranean

The tasting menu here rotates through a single Mediterranean region at a time, from the Maghreb to Andalusia to Greece, so what you eat depends entirely on when you show up. It's a fine dining experience with a Michelin star and serious beverage program to match, starting with cocktails in the lounge before the main dining room takes over. The whole thing moves with a warmth that keeps the ambition from tipping into ceremony.

  2. A hundred classics and eight seasonal originals on the cocktail menu, which is either a philosophy or a dare. This is the Houston cocktail bar that regulars will tell you changed the city's drinking culture, and they are not wrong to say it. The brass-accented room runs loud and energetic, the staff can talk you through any corner of that list, and the salty snacks exist to keep you at the bar longer.

  3. Colorful walls hung with aso oke fabric and Nigerian celebration paintings set the mood before the food even arrives. ChòpnBlọk is a West African bowl-and-bites spot that grew from a food hall stall into a full-service restaurant, and the menu stayed short on purpose: a handful of bowls, salads, and snacks, plus frozen drinks that earn their place on the menu. The New York Times put it on their 2025 Restaurant List, which makes sense for a room this precise and this cheerful.

  4. Rank 2. Hugo's

    Mexican

Chef Hugo Ortega's flagship is a dressy, sit-down Mexican restaurant on Westheimer that's been the city's go-to for regional cooking for what feels like forever. Brunch pulls a crowd on both days, Saturday à la carte and Sunday buffet with live music. Dinner runs deeper, with dishes like cabrito roasted and pulled from the bone. A James Beard nominee for Outstanding Hospitality.

  5. Poison Girl is a dark, narrow Montrose dive on Westheimer where personal space is treated as a rumor. The bourbon list is deep, but plenty of people at the bar are just ordering Lone Star and nodding at it. Everyone eventually drifts out to the backyard patio, where the evening opens up a little. Dress for sweat and spilled beer, and plan on a cheap tab and a bathroom with a past.

  6. Rank 6. ChòpnBlọk

    Fresh African

A fast-casual stall inside Houston's The Post food hall, ChòpnBlọk is the chef Ope Amosu's case for West African cooking as everyday food, not occasion food. Jollof rice, coconut curry bowls, and grilled suya skewers dusted in yaji peanut spice anchor the menu. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on the New York Times Restaurant List followed, which is a lot of attention for a rice bowl, and not undeserved.

  7. Rank 6. Light Years

    Natural Wine Bar

The menu at this natural wine bar is whatever your bartender decides to tell you about, because nothing is written down. That's a feature, not an oversight. Light Years occupies a converted bungalow on Alabama, pouring organic, biodynamic, and low-intervention bottles that Esquire flagged for its Best Bars in America list. Sit at the bar and let whoever's pouring lead; the conversation is kind of the point.

  8. A porch plopped in the driveway and a wall of giant palms make the front door a small scavenger hunt. Inside it's a coffeehouse by day and a cocktail bar by night, all worn midcentury furniture, with laptop people nursing cortados and a short wine list that includes an orange. The food is croissants from elsewhere, and the espresso martini is on the menu, as it legally must be.

  9. Sunflower yellow walls and tall windows that pull in light from every direction set the tone at this French bistro inside Hotel Saint Augustine. Chef Aaron Bludorn's menu leans into Gulf Coast flavors alongside the classics, so foie gras arrives with biscuits and crawfish sausage gets a Creole sauce. Breakfast runs all week, the patio is spacious, and the servers seem to understand that ease is its own kind of luxury.

  11. The line outside this Houston breakfast and brunch spot is so reliable that they've worked out a whole system: heaters in winter, water in summer, and occasionally a bouncy castle, which is a sentence you don't type about many restaurants. Southern and Creole comfort food is the draw, wings and waffles being the dish everyone mentions first, with catfish and grits not far behind. Show up when the doors open or plan around the wait.

  12. Rank 12. The Marigold Club

    British French

A player piano sets the tone at this Montrose dining room, where the dress code is "go ahead and try" and the menu leans toward Mayfair via Paris. The kitchen runs British-French, which means duck Wellington and oysters at the bar feel equally at home. The Marigold Club is the kind of place where ordering a martini first is not just acceptable but expected, and Esquire has already taken their side on the matter.

  13. Rank 13. Uchi

    Sushi

Uchi runs omakase and à la carte Japanese small plates out of a warm, low-lit room on Westheimer that fills up fast enough to make a reservation feel non-negotiable. The chef's background is in Austin, where the original location built a following, and the Houston room carries the same ethos: precise, inventive bites plated like someone actually thought about where to put them. Happy hour runs from four to six for anyone watching the tab.

  14. Rank 13. Un Caffe

    Coffee

A frozen coffee bear rides the top of the iced citrus Americano here, keeping the drink cold without diluting it, which tells you everything about how seriously this Midtown coffee shop thinks about a cup. The beans are sourced globally and roasted in-house, and the room runs warm enough that regulars tend to linger. Somewhere between a neighborhood hangout and a serious roaster's project.

  15. Rank 16. 13 Celsius

    Wine Bar

The wine list runs from skin-contact naturals to premier cru Burgundy, which tells you this Midtown wine bar is not trying to be one thing. It's been around forever, long enough to have shaped Houston's wine culture before anyone here was talking about orange wine. The cheese and charcuterie plate is an honest reason to stay for a second glass. The room is low-key and comfortable, the kind of place regulars treat as a standing appointment.

  16. Rank 16. Cucharita

    Mexican Bakery

  17. Rank 16. Two Headed Dog

    Cocktail Bar

The bathrooms are papered in decoupaged vintage Playboys, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Midtown dive bar. Named after a Roky Erickson song, Two Headed Dog leans hard into its free-spirited brief, with a colorful patio and a rotating cocktail menu that punches well above the surroundings. The frozen drinks are a particular draw for anyone who finds serious cocktail bars a little exhausting.

  18. Rank 19. Da Marco

    Modern Italian

    The awards

  19. Rank 19. Okto

    Mediterranean

The warm Frena arrives with pistachio butter, olives, and pickled peppers, and that's more or less the tone of the whole meal. Okto is a Mediterranean restaurant that draws a devoted Sunday brunch crowd, the kind that photographs first and eats immediately after. The cocktail list gets as much attention as the food, and the espresso martini seems to outnumber the people ordering coffee.

  20. A complimentary splash of bubbles lands on your table the moment you sit down, which sets the tone nicely for a Montrose pizza and pasta spot that's got more going on than it lets on. The wood-fired oven does most of the talking, and the honey cake with crème fraîche gelato has a way of making people miss their plans. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, and the wine list is longer than you'd expect.

  23. Rank 25. Augustine Lounge

    Cocktail Bar

Cactus Music curates the listening experience here, which tells you something about the clientele Hotel Saint Augustine is after. This hotel lounge sits across from the Menil campus and spills across three rooms of haute-design chairs and low couches, feeling more like someone's very tasteful living room than a hotel bar. The cocktail list is concise, the kitchen runs through the Bludorn team, and Montrose neighbors have adopted it accordingly.

  29. A sushi counter tucked inside a couture clothing store in Montrose, which is either the most Houston thing imaginable or a fever dream, depending on your mood. The omakase seats only a handful of guests, and the chefs take Japanese tradition as a starting point rather than a rulebook, dry-aging fish flown from Japan and finishing nigiri with black garlic or kumquats. Casual in spirit, meticulous in execution.

  32. The queso flameado arrives still bubbling, and that's the right way to start at this Tex-Mex cantina with deep roots in Houston's Ninfa's family tree. The menu runs the full Tex-Mex spread: big crispy tacos, cheese enchiladas, fajitas, fresh guacamole. Order the combo plate if you want a little of everything, which most tables seem to. The margaritas have their own following, and for good reason.

    Tex-Orleans Cajun & Creole

  37. The pastry chef here is a native Sicilian who treats the menu as a rough draft, regularly inventing things that don't exist anywhere else and then pulling them before you can tell your friends. This Montrose Italian bakery covers the classics, cannoli, cornettos, breakfast, lunch, but the reason to pay attention is whatever off-menu experiment is running that week. Come with an open mind and low attachment to specific plans.

  39. The smell hits you before you reach the counter, which is exactly how a bakery should announce itself. Love Croissants is a tiny counter shop in Midtown turning out butter croissants, layered pastries with sweet and savory fillings, and tarts, plus a rotating monthly croissant flavor that keeps regulars checking back. The chef started baking as a personal reset, which is an origin story that makes the whole operation feel a little more human.

  40. Rank 38. Osaka

    Sushi

A neighborhood sushi restaurant on Westheimer where the menu covers enough ground that nobody at the table argues, from rolls and sashimi to noodles and donburi bowls. The kitchen leans into consistency, which is its own kind of promise. Portions are generous, the room stays calm, and the regulars clearly know it. A second location sits on Bellaire Boulevard if this one's busy.

  42. Rank 48. Mi Luna

    Spanish

Mi Luna is a Spanish tapas restaurant with Moorish touches, tucked into the Montrose Collective. It spent two decades in Rice Village, vanished for a while, then reappeared in a shinier address, which is the Houston way. The menu leans on shared plates, a paella built from seafood, meat, and chicken, and a sweet-and-savory Moroccan chicken pie. Come hungry and with friends, because ordering for one defeats the point.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
