The Best Places in Quartier des Quinze-Vingts

  1. Bruno Verjus spent years as an entrepreneur, blogger, and food critic before opening this intimate counter restaurant in the 12th, which now holds two Michelin stars and a spot at number eight on the World's 50 Best list. He calls himself a middleman between his suppliers and the plate, which sounds modest until the food arrives. The daily tasting menu shifts entirely with what's available, cooked to order with the kind of restraint that lets exceptional produce do the talking.

  2. A navy-blue facade near the Marché d'Aligre hides a room that reads like a Parisian apartment, all Art Deco details and warm corners. This is serious modern fine dining, a two Michelin star restaurant where the chef's technique leans almost architectural and the sauces do the heavy lifting. The front of house runs with real warmth. Book well ahead.

  3. A traditional bistro near Bastille with red leather banquettes, a tiled floor, and a single waiter who handles the whole room without visible effort. There's one seating a night, so it's a dinner you plan around, not one you squeeze in. The menu leans offal, with sweetbreads that come with roughly a stick of butter and a pig's trotter, though the charred Kintoa pork won't make anyone feel judged.

  4. Rank 4. Olga

    Wine Bar

Olga is a cheese shop and wine bar across from Gare de Lyon, built for people who would rather eat well than eat a sad train sandwich. The sandwiches are baguette, cheese, and one spread, with no lettuce to apologize for. Think Bleu d'Auvergne with pickled cherries, or sheep's milk tomme with membrillo. A glass of natural wine and a sunny sidewalk table make the 12th feel like a vacation you didn't have to book.

  5. Rank 5. Bistro S

  6. Ten seats around an L-shaped oak counter make this a tasting-menu restaurant, and a quiet one, with pale stone walls and a minimalist setup that would pass for Kyoto. Everyone is served at the same moment by a solemn crew in black, and the courses lean on fire, fermentation, and plants from the chef's garden outside the city. Expect a lot of leaves, and dinner prices to match.

  8. Rank 5. Passerini

    Italian

Handmade pasta is the throughline at this Italian restaurant in the 12th, where Giovanni Passerini runs a traditional four-course menu that moves from primi to shared main courses without much fuss about it. The pasta changes with the season and leans into bold pairings; the mains tend toward whole roasted things worth splitting. A neighborhood room that draws people who eat out seriously but don't need a scene to prove it.

  9. Rank 5. Toy

    Noodle Shop

Toy is a small ramen bar near Bastille that skips the tonkotsu most of Paris defaults to and builds its bowls on a double broth with smoked eel dashi, plus a cold bowl for the heat-averse. The noodles are made by hand each day, and the menu is short enough to read in one breath. Bowls run about €20, which is Paris for noodles. The sharing plates exist, but the bowls are filling enough that you can ignore them.

  10. The terrine of cabbage and garlic arrives in portions that suggest nobody here has ever heard of restraint, which tells you most of what you need to know. This old-school bistro near Ledru-Rollin has been feeding devoted regulars rustic dishes from Berry and the Ardèche for decades. The founding patron's personality is still all over the room, even when he isn't. A place this stubbornly itself feels almost defiant in modern Paris.

  17. Three friends who collectively cooked at Le Meurice and Plaza Athénée named the restaurant after themselves, which is either charming or extremely on-brand for Paris. The compact dining room near Marché d'Aligre has exposed stone, jars of fermented vegetables on the shelves, and an open kitchen running vegetable-forward seasonal food that leans light and precise. A modern bistro that takes its produce seriously without taking itself too seriously.

  21. Blé Sucré is a neighborhood bakery in the 12th, a short walk from the Marché Beauvau, and it has recently added a few seats so you no longer have to eat your pastry on the sidewalk like a raccoon. The croissants are buttery and a touch sweet, with a shell that crackles like a kettle chip. The pain au chocolat leans closer to dessert, which is fine before nine, and The Infatuation put the croissants on its Paris list.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
