The Best Places in North Centrum

  1. Chandeliers, velvet, and a direct view over Dam Square set the tone at this fine dining restaurant inside Hotel TwentySeven. Tim Golsteijn holds a Michelin star and earns it by threading Thai green curry or za'atar through French technique without the seams showing. The sommelier runs a cellar that keeps pace. Dress accordingly and arrive without plans for the rest of the evening.

  2. Gold accents and 19th-century bones inside the Krasnapolsky hotel make The White Room feel like somewhere an Austrian archduchess might still expect a table. It holds a Michelin star, and the chef's cooking matches the room's ambition, pairing Dutch-grown produce with exotic spice in a tasting-menu format where the kitchen comes to you to explain what they've done. Vibrant and occasionally daring, with the confidence to pull it off.

  3. Rank 3. A-Fusion

    Pan-Asian

Sushi being made near the door, dim sum and a barbecue further back, a wok kitchen somewhere beyond that: A-Fusion runs several Asian kitchens under one roof, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand prices mean you can actually work through the menu. Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Korean flavours share billing, and the small-portion format on Zeedijk actively encourages ordering one of everything.

  4. Rank 3. Bridges

    Contemporary Seafood

  5. Two step-gabled houses from 1614 sit side by side near the center of Amsterdam, and the dining room inside feels like a set designer got carried away with Dutch Golden Age props, then forgot to leave. Open fireplace, candlelight, silver cutlery, hand-painted tiles. It's a fine dining restaurant doing refined, seasonal cooking that leans on Dutch produce with French technique. The wine list skews natural with a soft spot for French labels.

  6. An open kitchen sits at the center of the room, counter seats clustered around it like a dinner party that got out of hand in the best way. This is a French-leaning restaurant with a seasonal set menu that tilts toward vegetables, fish, and game, combining flavors in ways that feel bold rather than fussy. The cooking takes its cues from nature, and the wine list keeps pace with the kitchen. The Michelin Guide has it listed among its selected Amsterdam restaurants.

  7. Rank 5. THE DUCHESS

    Mediterranean

Stained-glass windows, antique clocks, and chandeliers that once watched over a bank's waiting room now preside over a very good dinner. The Duchess is an upscale brasserie with a Belle Époque soul, serving a broad Mediterranean menu that leans into southern France and Italy. Portions are generous and unfussy, the kind of place where beef Wellington and cacio e pepe coexist without anyone finding that strange. Weekend afternoon tea draws a dressed-up crowd.

  9. Rank 8. Super Lyan

    Cocktail Bar

A neon-lit cocktail bar inside a 17th-century Dutch canal house, which is a combination that shouldn't work as well as it does. The team behind Dandelyan and Lyaness runs this Amsterdam outpost, and the inventive drinks carry the same reputation. A second room next door runs quieter and looser, more living room than bar, if you need somewhere to land between rounds. Europe's 50 Best Bars has it at number 42.

  10. Café de Klepel is a canal-side brown-café type on a street with several near-twins, so if the sidewalk tables are gone when the sun comes out, a backup is a few steps away. It takes the usual bar snacks a notch up, with a beer list that goes past the pilsner and sparkling wine that isn't just prosecco or cava. Good for solo celebrating, since the anchovies don't require a feast to justify showing up.

  14. A canal-side bar on Kloveniersburgwal with what is claimed to be the largest genever selection in the Netherlands, Rosalia's Menagerie sits in De Wallen inside a former inn and takes Dutch spirits seriously enough to feel like a minor institution. The bartenders use genever as a proper cocktail spirit rather than a novelty, which shifts the whole experience. Pull up a stool, order something you've never heard of, and watch the canal do nothing in particular.

  15. Rank 15. Arca

    Asian-inspired Portuguese

Henrique Sá Pessoa, the Portuguese chef with a following back home, runs set menus here that pull Portuguese home cooking toward something more cosmopolitan, with the occasional East Asian lean. The portions stay generous even when the plating gets precise. Bespoke cocktails and a cool bar make the lunch crowd feel like they've found something. Set-menu restaurant, the kind where you dress up just enough to feel good about it.

  16. Rank 16. Domenica

    Italian

Flavio's modern Italian bistro sits right on the Noordermarkt, where the Jordaan's market-day energy drifts straight through the door. Seasonal dishes lean into genuine Italian generosity, the kind where octopus arrives with properly crisped skin alongside bold peppers and broccoletti. The terrace fills fast on sunny afternoons, and the bar inside is rarely quiet. The French and Italian wine list is worth lingering over.

  17. Rank 16. Roux

    Brasserie

The name is a clue: every great sauce begins with a roux, and this elegant brasserie takes that seriously, building dishes on sauces robust enough to be the point. The cooking roams freely, with playful combinations and textures that keep things from getting too solemn. The sommelier pairs wines with the kind of enthusiasm that makes you feel the choice matters. Grab a seat at the long dining counter if you can.

  18. A brown café in a centuries-old distillery building on one of Amsterdam's prettiest canals, where the dark wood and stained glass feel less like décor and less like history and more like they just never left. In summer, tables spill out to the water; in winter, everyone piles in and the cozy interior earns that word. Beer is affordable for this part of town, and the kitchen runs a short menu of Dutch bar snacks and classics.

  20. The whole point here is standing upright, glass touching your lips, because the low wooden bar makes it nearly impossible to do otherwise. That's how they've done it in this old Amsterdam tasting house for centuries, and the room looks exactly as you'd expect: unchanged, unhurried, and slightly miraculous. The jenever and house liqueurs come from a small distillery a few doors down, and the list is long enough to keep you honest about how many you'll try.

  21. Rank 18. Pulitzer's Bar

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar inside the Pulitzer hotel where the drinks were developed with a New York fragrance house, so the menu is as much about what you smell as what you taste. Forest-green walls, marble, glowing orbs, and hushed Art Deco calm make the whole thing feel like stepping into someone's very tasteful 1930s study. Order slowly; there's no reason to rush.

  22. Two glowing Corian bars shaped like river stones face each other across the lobby divide of the Grand Sofitel, which sets the tone for what this cocktail bar is going for. Champagne flights, oysters from a raw bar, and well-made cocktails draw a dressed-up crowd. It skews designer and upmarket, so dress accordingly and order accordingly. If you want a brown bar, Amsterdam has better ones a short walk away.

  23. The barrels lining the walls here aren't decorative, they hold the jenever and liqueurs you're about to drink. An old-school Dutch proeflokaal, or tasting house, this one has been around forever on a quiet lane just off the Dam, its dark wood interior feeling less like preservation and more like nothing ever needed changing. Order a traditional pour and stand at the bar the way generations of Amsterdammers have, without overthinking it.

  24. The building used to be a jenever distillery's tasting house, and the shift from spirits to beer hasn't made it any less serious about drinking. This old-school Amsterdam beer bar carries over 200 bottles and seventeen taps, leaning heavily on Belgian and Dutch brews, with Trappist beers as a particular obsession. It is unpretentious in the way that places are when they have nothing to prove, which around here is a compliment.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
