The Best Places in North Logan Square

  1. A neighborhood restaurant in Logan Square that won a James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality, which tells you something before you've even sat down. The menu rotates with the seasons, so regulars show up trusting the kitchen rather than ordering from memory. The room fills fast from morning through dinner, and the bar in the adjacent space is a solid solo option. The Michelin Guide lists it as a Bib Gourmand.

  2. The antojitos here lean into Aztec culinary tradition that most Mexican restaurants skip entirely, which gives this Logan Square neighborhood spot a menu worth reading slowly. The chef has earned James Beard nominations and a Michelin Bib Gourmand while running what is, at its heart, a warm, unpretentious antojeria. Seasonal cocktails, knowledgeable servers, and a room that stays lively without tipping into loud.

  3. Naan as a pizza base, naan as a butter chicken calzone brushed with ghee, naan as the main argument for coming back: this Logan Square Indian restaurant has built a personality around the flatbread, then filled out the menu with Kerala crab curry and chana chaat to prove it isn't a one-trick kitchen. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, with a James Beard semifinalist nod behind it. The exposed brick and long bar make the room feel loose, which matches the cooking.

  4. Sugar Moon is a takeout-only bakery in Logan Square, so there's no table to claim, just a sidewalk line that starts forming a good half hour before the 9am opening and doesn't care about the weather. The reward is a curried cauliflower croissant or a Nutella-pear brioche bun, plus scones that crumble the way scones should. Pastry runs cheap, the wait costs you a Saturday morning, and it's been named among the country's favorite bakeries by The Infatuation.

  5. A sunny corner spot in Logan Square where the kitchen skips the tweezers and the fancy glassware in favor of food that tastes like itself. Cellar Door Provisions is a casual, Mediterranean-leaning restaurant with the kind of unfussy cooking that makes you wonder why anyone bothers with the other kind. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. Counter seats, date nights, and wandering-in-off-the-street all work equally well here.

  6. Rank 6. Longman & Eagle

    Contemporary American

The whiskey list at this Logan Square gastropub runs long enough to suggest the bar is the main event, and the dim wood-paneled room backs that theory up. Then the kitchen, tucked into a corner, starts sending out terrines and sweetbreads and omelets folded with brie that quietly reframe the whole situation. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of neighborhood place where people wander in at breakfast and somehow stay for dinner.

  7. The wood-burning oven does most of the talking at this upscale Greek taverna just off Logan Square Park, kissing nearly everything on the menu with smoke. Warm pita arrives with a lineup of dips, lamb chops come in serious portions, and the baklava froyo with pistachio sauce is the kind of thing you didn't see coming. The wine list runs entirely Greek, from Macedonia to Santorini, which takes a certain confidence.

  8. Hooligan is a small Logan Square bistro that cooks the Great Lakes with French technique, which is how you end up with perch under gribiche and pike dumplings in a sauce that sounds like it has a title. The caviar service comes with crispy potatoes and house dip, a very Midwestern way to dress up fish eggs. Dinner only, a la carte or a two-person spread, and every table gets a nightly treat, so cookies and milk may be waiting.

  11. Rank 13. Kfire

    Korean

Kfire is a fast-casual Korean American spot on Milwaukee Ave where you build your own bowl, and nearly everything on the menu bends to your will, including swapping the rice for salad. The galbi gets compared favorably to sit-down barbecue places, and the Impossible crumbles come marinated like galbi and pressed into patties, which is a sentence nobody expected to write. Eater lists it among Chicago's best Korean restaurants.

  12. Rank 13. Mano a Mano

    Modern Trattoria

Mano a Mano is a dimly lit Italian trattoria on Milwaukee Avenue, run by the people behind the neighboring Andros Taverna and Asador Bastian, so the block is basically a family reunion with better lighting. The pastas are made in-house, with seafood-stuffed shapes and a cacio e pepe, and the focaccia arrives with stracchino. Expect a wine list with some ambition and a mid-to-upper bill, so dress like you planned this.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
