  1. Rank 92. Brisé

    Contemporary French

An open kitchen in a sleek modern room, where contemporary French cooking quietly folds Asian ingredients into the kind of seasonal menu that changes every few months and makes last season feel like a different restaurant. The chef's touch is restrained on the plate but precise underneath, and the weekday lunch set is a sensible way in. Tucked down a lane in Zhongshan, it's a Michelin Guide selection that rewards a little effort to find.

  7. Rank 92. Clover

    Contemporary French

Jean-François Piège's first restaurant outside France sits inside a luxury department store, which sounds like a punchline until the food arrives. This contemporary French tasting room runs seasonal menus that pull hits from Piège's Paris restaurants and fold in local Taiwanese ingredients along the way. The wild raspberry soufflé with pistachio ice cream has its own reputation. Dress up; Bellavita is that kind of building.

  9. Rank 92. Dasuke

    Contemporary Japanese

Counter seating, dimmed lighting, and a sake list deep enough to require tasting notes set the tone at this intimate omakase spot in Da'an. The kitchen draws on Niigata flavors and locally sourced ingredients, and the menu lands somewhere between Japanese tradition and something harder to categorize, including a deep-fried patty of beef and sashimi served in a house bun, which is either an act of genius or a dare, possibly both.

    Yakitori Japanese

The open kitchen runs loud and hot, with flames climbing high enough to make the modern room feel like an old Tokyo alley. Fumée is a yakitori restaurant inside the Regent Hotel, running two nightly seatings through a set tasting menu with an optional sake pairing. It's the sister spot to an Osaka original, and the sourcing shows in the skewers. Sleek space, serious smoke.

  33. A Japanese chef running a contemporary French kitchen on the second floor of a Taipei hotel sounds like a setup, but the seasonally shifting millefeuille and seafood-forward menus built around local teas and spices make a quiet case for the combination. The room is understated to the point of calm, and both wine and tea sommeliers are on hand, which does rather raise the bar for your next dinner party.

  37. Rank 92. Rong Ju

    Cantonese

Faux red brick overhead gives the dining room the feel of a modern Chinese home, warm without being heavy. This is a Cantonese set-menu restaurant inside the Capella hotel, where the kitchen layers contemporary touches onto the classics, truffle finding its way into the dim sum, sakura ebi into the stir-fried cabbage. The tea selection is curated to pair with the meal, which is the kind of detail that separates a thoughtful kitchen from a merely competent one.

  43. Miaoli Hakkanese-style glutinous rice balls are the whole point here, stuffed with pork and vegetables and made from year-old round-grain sticky rice for that particular chewy pull. It's a casual counter spot that's been around forever, with a second-generation owner still running the same recipe his mother built the place on. The scallion oil chicken drumsticks have their own following. Check social media before you go, because the hours are their own puzzle.

  66. A coffee shop on the 89th floor of Taipei 101, which does settle the question of where to take a meeting when you want the other person slightly off-balance. kafeD is a calm, unhurried cafe serving pour-overs and lattes alongside light pastries, with the kind of view that makes the city below look like a very convincing scale model. Come for the coffee, stay because the elevator ride back down feels like commitment.

  70. A two-story house tucked into a lane off Linsen North Road, After5 is a coffee shop that slides into neighborhood bar as the evening arrives. The lofted upper floor looks down over the main bar, which gives the place a lived-in, borrowed-apartment feeling. Single-origin coffees and fruit-forward signature drinks share the menu with tea, and later with beer and alcohol. It's the kind of spot where nobody seems to be in a hurry to leave.

  71. The walls at this coffee shop in Da'an are lined with art and design magazines, album covers, and posters that feel like someone's actual collection rather than set dressing. The menu splits cleanly between espresso drinks and pour-overs, and the whole operation has that same unhurried quality. There's a small interior and a semi-enclosed porch out front. You can stop in for a quick one, but weekday mornings have a way of stretching.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
